I'm hoping to get clear information about the first salute after graduation from an academy. My oldest DS is enlisted in the USAF. My youngest DS (his little brother) will be graduating in 2027 from USMMA. AF son plans to wear his uniform to graduation and give his little brother his first salute as an officer. I know this is special. I've read that little brother should give a silver dollar to his first Salute from an enlisted person. Is it just any silver dollar? Or is there something else he should be thinking of giving his brother?

My son went with a 2026 American Silver Dollar. There is also the Morgan Silver Dollar which is cheaper. There are lots of commemorative silver dollars specifically for the first salute. I say pick what means most to both your DS's.

One of my highest honors was rendering my son his first salute at his commissioning at the National Museum of the Marine Corps 13 ish years ago. He went to the bank and bought a silver dollar.

My DS did not have family members that served in the military to do his first salute with. Instead, he had a close friend from high school that had enlisted in the Coast Guard and they arranged to meet up when both were home and did the salute. It was something special and meaningful between the two of them as their friendship had started in high school and they were still in touch after many years as they both were in service to our country. My son went to the bank and got a silver dollar and got his little brother to take photos of the occasion.

I would look on ebay for a nice 1927 Peace Dollar or wait and get a 2027 American Silver Eagle. Likewise you could get an American Silver eagle from your DS's birth year. Silver prices are high so expect to pay.

The AOG will give your senior the silver dollar to use at the commissioning ceremony, at least that’s how it’s been done before unless it’s changed.
