First Submarine Assignment

I don’t think so. Mine should be in SOBC next summer and then “on a long fishing trip”. We’re waiting to find out if he’ll have leave between prototype and SOBC, and again after SOBC (beyond tge 3 days to move).

He called while I was writing this…. Today was comps and he passed!! Hooyah! (And yes, he’ll be Uber-ing tonight).
congrats!! maybe they will meet on a boat one day.

Power school is ~6 months, as is Prototype, and SOBC is ~15 weeks. Generally that’s the order of progression, but we know one USNA grad who was sent to SOBC inbetween the other two this year.
BTW, for those in the sub pipeline - if things get backed up and they want people to do SOBC out of order, try to avoid it. SOBC is relatively relaxed and it's a good time to get your ducks in a row for your move to your sub. Prototype, especially when things are backed up and getting signatures is harder, can be very, very stressful. DS wasn't given a choice in the matter and going from a rough schedule in Prototype [due to equipment issues] directly to his sub which almost immediately deployed was very difficult.

And in more advice from the woulda/coulda/shoulda’s: if offered pre-program prep course, DO IT! Those students who did easily outperformed their peers or at least had an easier time the first two months.

Congratulations! Sub guys from my class were spread over three NNPS classes, not counting surface nukes and grad school people, with the bulk of the students classing up in the middle of the three classes.

Went through the pipeline in the early 2000s. I was temporarily assigned a staff job in the Commandant's office and then classed up in November (~ 5 months waiting to start). Preferences were submitted in Nuclear Power School (first of 3 schools in Charleston, SC) and we were notified of first assignment during prototype training (second of 3 schools in New York or Charleston). Reported to first assignment in March, ~ 22 months after graduation. I can ask some junior officers if it has changed much over the years. Things like standing in power school and prototype could impact assignment like discussed earlier, if a boat is struggling, they will send more talent to that wardroom for example.

I think my husband was right there with you in the exact same timeline :). But his stash job was something with asst company officer or so. I remember you put in preferences like boat type, home port preference etc and they just figure it out with each graduating SOBC class. Of course the detailer hadn’t been notified of a home port shift for DH’s assigned boat but we got it all figured out eventually 😋
