KABUL — Five American troops were killed in southern Afghanistan in a rare friendly fire air strike that struck a team of Afghan and U.S. troops conducting a security operation in the lead up to Saturday’s presidential election, U.S. and Afghan officials familiar with the incident said Tuesday.
U.S. military officials said they have launched an investigation into the incident, which occurred in Zabul Province.
