Hello, my son and I are tentatively coming up for his overnight candidate visit to West Point in about a week and a half. I would like to take one extra day in the schedule to fly fish. He doesn't fly fish and will do his own thing. I know nothing about NY. Can anybody tell me any access points for any wadeable trout rivers or creeks within an hour or so of West Point or somewhere between Newark airport and West Point? I don't want to get too far off route and haven't booked lodging yet.

Thank you.

Arghhh, I just heard trout season in NY ends October 15th. Need to confirm but if that is so, what could I fish for that time of year in that area? Wadefishing? Thanks, Capt MJ.

there are year round catch and release sections of the Beaverkill, near Roscoe NY.
The fly shops in Roscoe can provide up to date information, typically on their websites.
Roscoe is not between Newark and West Point, but it is about an hour from WP and less than 2 from Newark

Call the Beaverkill Angler in Roscoe, N.Y. If there are any fishable rivers at this time of year, they will know. I used to fish up there.

There are a few streams with year-round special regulations. The Willowemoc is one. You need to go, just for the sake of being part of the history. The region is considered the birthplace of American fly fishing.

Agree. I used to fish those rivers (Beaverkill, Willowemoc, Upper Delaware). That is a beautiful area. All on the West side of the Hudson in the Catskills. There is also the Catskill Fly Fishing Center and Museum in Livingston Manor, N.Y. But call a fly shop and speak to a guide. If it were me, I would hire a guide for a day. If I weren't so far I way, I would join you.

Thank you for the fly fishing ideas everyone. I got some good ideas within 30 minutes and up to 1.5 hours from Dette Flies as well as an outdoor shop much closer to West Point called Old Souls (I don't think strictly a fly shop). The Croton, the Esopus and the Ramapo (very close to WP) are the closest that still are in trout season. Still deciding where I am going but hope catch my first NY fish!

I have fished the Croton. It gets a lot of pressure during peak season. I used to live in Westchester County. Certainly, get out and enjoy the fishing, but I warn you it’s gonna be pretty tough. I would suggest driving the extra miles and trying the Esopus. Post pictures for us if you have any luck
