Do any cadets ever fly home for a weekend? I've heard that if you are in good military/academic/athletic standing you get more free time on the weekends.. do cadets ever take a quick trip home?

yup, especially three day weekends. can be somewhat cost prohibitive but generally getting the paperwork approved isn't a big deal.

Yes, many cadets get approval to go home for a 3-day. Don't know of too many who would spend the money for a 2-day, but if you really want to and it's a blue weekend then I don't see why you couldn't.

As long as there's no training and you're in good standing, you should have no trouble.

How does it work if a friend is passing through town and wants to visit you at USAFA? Are you allowed to get off and show them around campus, etc.?

You can make that work. You're supposed to wear service dress and stay with them at all times when they're in the cadet area. If it's a silver weekend (training), you'll have to work around your schedule. If it's blue, you'll have the whole weekend.

Assuming you're not restricted, you can get off campus with them. You can also avoid being restricted by sending up the appropriate paperwork to get approval ahead of time.

How frequently do you have 'blue' weekends during your first year at the academy? Also... how many cadets try and keep a relationship with a girlfriend back home?

It depends on the month. During the fall, any weekend with a Saturday football game is a silver weekend, and there are also a couple training weekends, SAMIs, etc. This semester I think we had 4 blue weekends in a row and we'll only have one more until after recognition.

A lot of cadets try to maintain relationships...try being the operative word...
