Quick question...how does USNA handle mids with special diets, lactose intolerance, or other stuff like that? ...I am not talking major peanut allergies, but just minor things.

The first question is whether you'll be admitted. Remember that you're being qualified to be in the USN/USMC, not just USNA. The military isn't a place that can easily accommodate special diets and thus I believe that many food allergies are disqualifying. Please check with Larry Mullen in the DODMERB forum for details about what the various branches of the military will allow.

If you are being medically treated for any food allergy it is deffinitly a DODMERB question. If you are talking you have a sensative stomach and certain foods tend to distress you then it's no big deal.

My mid has a touchy stomach when it comes to dairy products. There are enough food options on the yard to and at King Hall to compensate for any items she does not care to eat. Interestingly, Lactaid is considered a diatary suppliment and is permitted even durring plebe summer

USNA does not accommodate special diets for food allergies, religion of other reasons. If my memory serves me correctly King Hall used to serve fish on Friday evening during Lent but I think that was about the extent of any accommodation and not sure they even do that any more.

A food allergy will be vetted through the DODMERB examination process.

There is a diet kitchen where some special diet items can be procured with a chit from the nutritionist or medical, however as was stated above medical allergies big disqualifier from service. And last I knew the lent thing still happens and a passover table was also available. Most my friends used to hate lent because we couldn't get meat in meals.

Thanks for the responses...I just have a sensitive stomach and sometimes need to take Lactaid, and I was wondering if that would be allowed during Plebe summer...saw the response that said yes

My child is class of 2013 and also has difficulty with milk products at times. Lactaid is sold in the exchange at the academy, so no worries there. She only needed to worry during plebe summer. The way they explained it to her was that this was a lifestyle issue and not an allergy.

She brought the Lactaid with her and a note from her a doctor. Everything was reviewed on I day and it was given back to her the same day. Although she did tend to avoid excessive dairy products until summer was over.

We sent our mid off to plebe summer with lactaid and they let her keep it with no doctors note. Sent more suppies with plebe summer care packages as the summer wore on. Durring AC year it has been a non issue.

Curious do you have your appointment? Also, were you recruited to play soccer for Navy?

Best of luck on gaining an appointment. Would you be interested in playing for Navy in another sport? Some interesting walk-on possiblities depending on your interests.
