I’ve taken my 5th SAT/ACT and received my score today. I haven’t gotten above a 24 ACT/ 1120 SAT. I think I will continue to retake but the amount of money I’ve put into collegeboard and tuturoing is getting ridiculous. I have a good GPA and a ton of great extracurricular s and leadership postitions, but these SATs are getting frustrating. Do I have a chance at any service academies with these scores? I am considering emailing a coach at one of them to see if possibly I could work becoming a recruited athlete to get a prep school oppoiurtnity.

Keep pushing. Have you tried Khan Academy (free) or other online test prep? Some people do better with self study than with tutors.

No one can tell you if you have a chance. There are too many variables. Your test scores are low, but there is no way to be certain how admissions will view your file.

Can't hurt to contact a coach. Also, talk to your high school coach and get input on your potential for college athletics. Any interested college coach will contact your high school coach - good to know what your high school coach will be saying.

Yeah I tried Khan for my first two tests, then did a rigorous tuturoing program for the next two. I take very difficult classes and it’s just so frustrating why I haven’t gotten a high score yet. But I will talk to my HS coach because I feel having an academy coach interested in me could defintley help my application.

If you've taken it 5 times and honestly prepared, then your score is your score and is unlikely to change more than a few points. As to your admissibility with that score - you know as well as anyone what the class averages are, and where this score stands in relation to the averages. If all your other statistics and background are outstanding, you may very well be a candidate for prep school.

As to becoming a recruited athlete at this point in the process - have other Div. 1 schools been calling? If they haven't, that says something. Playing Div. 1 sports in college isn't just something you decide to do at the last minute, unless you are in the .1% of freak athletes in the world, or you are involved in a niche sport

I realize. I thought they only take minorities and atheltes in the prep school? And as far as athletics go I feel I would be capable to play at the academy, and I have a great relationship with the coach who also has a legacy with my current high school. He used to always say if you really wanna go here, to talk to him.

Most, not all, prep candidates are minorities and athletes.

Then why on earth haven't you already talked to the coach?

Have you tried studying using Khan Academy online? It’s free and is a great tool for studying. Have you tried taking the ACT?

I forgot to add my DS studies daily for an hour and took practice tests over the weekend. Did it for a month and raised his score 120 points.

Yes I have tried that. I even take practice tests without being timed and get 1350s consistently. It’s just ridiculous sometimes.

Agree 100% with this strategy. My son focused only on taking practice tests before this latest SAT. He would take the test just like it was being administered (timer, #2 pencils, no distractions in the house, etc.), I would grade it for him and then he would review and work through the questions he missed. He just got his results today and he went up 90 total points (80 in MATH, which was his focus). He said it really made a difference.

"Hey pal, how do ya' get to Carnegie Hall?"
Answer: "Practice"

No idea what the rest of your package is, but you may very well be a candidate for prep. And no, you do not have to be a ‘minority or athlete’ to attend. Prep is for people that need to strengthen something in their application, that they feel will succeed with that boost, and they want to appoint.

You mentioned your GPA. But what are your classes? Are you doing well in challenging AP classes? Or basket weaving. See the difference? It’s something they look at, that you are taking the most difficult classes offered. If you are doing well in easy classes, prep school won’t help you the following 4 years. If you are rocking AP Chem, calc, and Lit, your act/sats ‘should’ reflect that after so much prep. Something doesn’t make sense.

Re recruited athlete: if it’s an individual sport, you can easily check stats online and see where you stack up. A team sport, it’s a little more difficult to gauge but you should have an idea. They have a sports recruiting questionnaire you should fill out. It’s not too late, if they are looking for what you have to offer, they will talk to you. Perhaps you won’t be their high level, blue chip athlete, but maybe they are interested in having you on the team. Blue chips get an endorsement on their application from the coach, the others? Maybe an annotation (I have no idea) but you won’t know if you don’t try.

Are you wondering about the current class cycle? If so, have you already submitted for your nominations? Our deadlines have already passed. You cannot skip past this step. Even blue chip athletes need a nomination.

Lastly, do you have a solid backup plan? You may also be a candidate for self prepping for a year, taking a first year usafa like schedule and doing well, reapplying then next year. There are several posters already here posting that this is their 2nd, 3rd try. Have you applied RITC? Have a solid plan B and beyond.

Do you have a chance? No way to know, but those scores are for sure not your strong point in your application.

I took practice tests every Saturday under TEST DAY CONDITIONS. That is, wake up at 7:30, have a very light breakfast (trust me, you don't want to need to use the restroom in the middle of the test!), and then get started at exactly 8:30. Take the test under a timer and with the exact length of breaks that would be given on test day. I did this every Saturday for 3 months before my test. On the weekdays I did KhanAcademy practice question for about 15-30 minutes. I didn't take any prep classes but bought 2 books with a total of 15 practice tests between them. I did them all. I got a 1550 on my SAT.
