For Those Awaiting an Appointment/TWE

For those few complaining about not being notified of a TWE or appointment I have found that my son's journey in the academy application process since January of 2016 has prepared him well in the college application process. He has secured an academic scholarship and a ROTC scholarship as well as applied to numerous smaller scholarships. Regardless if he doesn't make the cut for the academy my son will be fine as will every other applicant that didn't make it. Just to have made it this far means your son is the cream of the crop. Good kids comes from great parents.

I really thought this morning might be the morning to see some results. Anyone out there hear anything? I keep hearing this magical April 15th date. Do you think that's for appointments only? Will waiting list recipients hear then? Will rejections hear then?
Our admissions counselor said we would hear if we did not get in by the end of this week.

I think that's going to be a massive wave of TWE's :( along with a few last minute appointments. Seems like the appointments have slowed down tremendously and from what I've seen in prior posts, and of history dictates, mid-April sees all the TWE's, some preps, and scholarships. But it's not over yet!
I agree

I think by around the 15th
DS received TWE from USNA 2 weeks ago. Starting to come to grips that USAFA may be sending him a TWE soon. He had a plan B prior to receiving Navy TWE but now is considering going in a different direction. He believes he did not receive and offer of appointment from Navy because his ACT was a bit low and that he might not have been the MOC Primary Nominee? He received nominations from 2 Senators and 1 Congressman to USNA. Only one Senator nominated him to USAFA.

Question: How did others find out they were the MOC Primary Nominee?
MOC stated same when my DS was first nominated in December.

For the most part I accept and respect the entire SA process as is, but the one thing that bothers me the most is the inconsistency across the Nation in regards to nominations, nom ranking, and transparency. Each district has its own set of rules it seems. For example, our district does not rank the nominations. The MOC submits the names as a whole and leaves it up to the SA to sort it out. Yet other districts obviously rank and notify their nominees of their position. I'm not sure which way is better necessarily, but I think it should be consistent at least. Any thoughts?

My district does not rank their nominees either. I think that is better because it makes the process less political. I have heard stories of people donating to a congressman's campaign with the hope of being ranked number 1. The is obviously unethical. Not ranking the nominees puts the power in the hands of the admission committee instead of a local congressman. The avoids the possibility of a conflict of interest effecting the admissions process.

I was under the impression that most MOCs ranked their nominees to the SAs. I do know there were 3 dissimilar application processes for our 3 MOC. When looking at who was nominated by each MOC, often one applicant only appeared for one MOC although the lists share several names. When I asked a MOC Staffer about it,they said the MOCs try to work together so that most applicants will at least get a nomination to their first choice SA from one of the MOCs, a good thing.

Most might but not all. For instance, in our district if a MOC submitted 10 nomination to a SA lets say ( I don't know how many there were), but say there were 10, he doesn't tell the SA that Nominee A or Nominee B is choice #1 or Choice #2. He just sends all 10 and says "Here are the best 10 we want to represent our district. You choose.". At least that's how all my DD's laisons explained it to us and a staff member.
At the end of this week (Lord willing!) it won't matter either way. She will either have been appointed or not having been seated #1 or not. And it will all have been due to her hard work, effort, dedication, persistence, and desires. All we did as parents was love and support her and will continue to do so through Plan A, B, C or Z! :) The entire world is ahead of these kids. I could NEVER do the things these amazing young men and women do.

Do any of our kids deserve these appointments? Of course they do! They worked hard!
Did they earn it? Of course they do! They worked hard!
Is it owed to them? Absolutely not!!
We cannot raise a generation of "Trophy Winners" Not everybody gets a ribbon for showing up. Give everybody a fair shot at the gate. Open the gate. Shoot off the starting him. Let them run. Winners take their places. The rest....Go back and train harder.
Your next race starts in less than 12 months!

My DS is a reapply this year. We are from a geographically large district, but not a large population. Our MOC nominated him both last year and this year, but only spoke with him on the phone, never in person. Most young adults from our area seek appointments to the Naval academy.

I thought last years wait was excruciating, and I didn't expect the same this year bc he is having an amazing year at his prep school, 4.0 both semesters, flying, so close to PPL, AFROTC, and more. Sometimes bc we don't see anything happening, we think our DS or DD is 'falling through the cracks' at academy admissions. They are not.

I was reminded yesterday that those with offers of appointment have until April 15 to accept or decline. There are also some on falcon scholarships at his school who haven't heard yet either.

Your DS DD is not only competing against the best of the best in high school, but also the best of the best who didn't get in last year, and active military.
Add in the academy's own prep school applicants, recruited athletes, and you begin to see how selective the process and why this wait is so , so long.

My DS received a Principle/Primary Nomination from his MOC. MOC called my son on 12/22/16 and told him. Not all MOC give Principle/Primary Nominations, some give USAFA their list and let USAFA rank the list.

With that being said, my DS is still waiting to hear from USAFA. My DS contacted his ALO on 4/1/17 and was told he has an offer coming and to be patient that the process takes time.

My DS has a friend that got the Principle for our district last year and he did not get his appointment until 4/28/16. I don't know how USAFA does the appointments, but I do know that until you have a TWE it isn't over. I also know that several TWE's got appointments in May last year.
Curious - how did the ALO know there was an offer coming? What info did he have access to? Thank you...

Our MOC does rank the students, and my DS was the primary nominee. I can see both sides of it. But our MOC takes the interviews very seriously and has an entire committee of professionals in his district judge the files. In that context, I am ok with a MOC being able to select the rankings of their nominees. Our MOC was an AF pilot and the lead of his interview committee is a USAFA graduate. In that context, my DS was very honored to receive the primary nomination.

We recently found out that a woman who's on one of our senatorial academy advisory panels remembers me and my husband from childhood. She informed us weeks after the appointment that the reason our DS did not get a nomination from her panel's slate was because he was a clear front runner in our District. So by having it essentially "locked up"...they passed on adding him to their nomination slate so they could offer a nomination to someone else across the state who was deserving and up against greater competition. Fair enough...but they knew that 2 months before we were notified of his appointment.

So even though (no one would ever admit) our DS could have competed for the top of a senator's slate...he didn't even make the slate because they had already talked to our local MOC about making sure he got appointed from our district rep's slate. They definitely talk to each other and try to make sure they're sending the most qualified people they can from their state. They also have to consider who has applied to multiple SA's and making sure everyone gets a nomination to their first choice SA. I'm sure it's a tough task.

The ALO said he called admissions to check the status on DS.

Our MOC also takes the process very seriously. His committee is made up of current and retired military from all branches, some of which are ALO's and some were graduates of academies themselves.

Is your DS a Free Agent or did he receive a Falcon Scholarship?

I

Is your DS a Free Agent or did he receive a Falcon Scholarship?

Free agent.

Of course there is no guarantee going this route, but his interests, strengths, and needs were best served at MMI.

MMI reps are in contact with each of the academy's admissions departments, and visits occur between each during the year. The SAP program is modeled and structured based on what each academy is looking for. Again, no guarantee, but MMI has a vested interest in wanting their cadets to succeed, and set up their program offerings to make that possible. Professors reviewed DS's essays, local ALO is former Academy military pilot, and meets with MMI cadets. I know the adult leader on my DS floor also submitted a report on his leadership during the reapplication process.

Again, different routes if one wants to reapply, this was just the best fit for him.

Please feel free to PM if you'd like some more details about experience as a free agent.

Thank you pa_ptmon.

My DS is also a reapply from last year. We also come from a large geographical district, however our district also has a large population.

My DS attended NWP as a free agent. MOC and ALO recommended my DS attend NWP last year. I was not excited about DS attending NWP because there is no college credit attached to it, but DS was determined to going there because MOC and ALO recommended it.

Like MMI, NWP also has a great program and is contact with each academy admissions department and has visits from each academy for the students. They also have modeled and structured their program based on what the academies are looking for.

Despite my original feelings NWP was a great fit for DS and he received a Principle Nomination on 12/22/16 and we are still waiting to hear from USAFA. You are correct, I thought last years wait was excruciating, and I didn't expect the same this year with the Principle Nomination. Last year DS recieved his TWE on 4/28/16.

Congratulations to your DS on being close to PPL, that is a great achievement. My DS got his PPL two years ago. He is close to getting his glider rating now.

Thanks for the information about the April 15th deadline for current offers, I was not aware of that. Most of the Falcon Scholarships my DS attended NWP got their appointment offers last month. So far none of the free agents have gotten any. You are correct there is much that goes into this process and they are not falling through the cracks.

All of DD and DS are the best of the best and not matter what the outcome they and their families have much to proud of.

If no appt comes would you still recommend nwp or any prep school as a free agent over college and afrotc?
