For Those Awaiting an Appointment/TWE

I

Is your DS a Free Agent or did he receive a Falcon Scholarship?

Free agent.

Of course there is no guarantee going this route, but his interests, strengths, and needs were best served at MMI.

MMI reps are in contact with each of the academy's admissions departments, and visits occur between each during the year. The SAP program is modeled and structured based on what each academy is looking for. Again, no guarantee, but MMI has a vested interest in wanting their cadets to succeed, and set up their program offerings to make that possible. Professors reviewed DS's essays, local ALO is former Academy military pilot, and meets with MMI cadets. I know the adult leader on my DS floor also submitted a report on his leadership during the reapplication process.

Again, different routes if one wants to reapply, this was just the best fit for him.

Please feel free to PM if you'd like some more details about experience as a free agent.

Thank you pa_ptmon.

My DS is also a reapply from last year. We also come from a large geographical district, however our district also has a large population.

My DS attended NWP as a free agent. MOC and ALO recommended my DS attend NWP last year. I was not excited about DS attending NWP because there is no college credit attached to it, but DS was determined to going there because MOC and ALO recommended it.

Like MMI, NWP also has a great program and is contact with each academy admissions department and has visits from each academy for the students. They also have modeled and structured their program based on what the academies are looking for.

Despite my original feelings NWP was a great fit for DS and he received a Principle Nomination on 12/22/16 and we are still waiting to hear from USAFA. You are correct, I thought last years wait was excruciating, and I didn't expect the same this year with the Principle Nomination. Last year DS recieved his TWE on 4/28/16.

Congratulations to your DS on being close to PPL, that is a great achievement. My DS got his PPL two years ago. He is close to getting his glider rating now.

Thanks for the information about the April 15th deadline for current offers, I was not aware of that. Most of the Falcon Scholarships my DS attended NWP got their appointment offers last month. So far none of the free agents have gotten any. You are correct there is much that goes into this process and they are not falling through the cracks.

All of DD and DS are the best of the best and not matter what the outcome they and their families have much to proud of.
If no appt comes would you still recommend nwp or any prep school as a free agent over college and afrotc?

Good question. That was the concern I had last year when DS choose NWP. I was not against going free agent with the other Prep Schools because they were either Junior Colleges or Universities and DS would come out of them with college credits. NWP, however has no college credit. I can say now after DS attended NWP that it was worth it and I would definitely recommend a Prep School as a free agent, which one you choose would be a personal choice. My DS was determined that NWP was the only choice because it came recommended by MOC and ALO.

As far as recommending it over college and AFROTC, I don't know - that again has to be a personal choice. Attending a Prep School puts you on a 5 year college plan if you get into USAFA. Attending college with AFROTC puts you in a 4 or 5 year college plan depending on how impacted the college is. Two years ago DS had a friend who went with college and AFROTC over a Falcon Scholarship, because he did not want to attend an extra year in college, now he is looking at an extra year in college anyways because the classes are impacted and he is having trouble getting classes.

DS received TWE from USNA 2 weeks ago. Starting to come to grips that USAFA may be sending him a TWE soon. He had a plan B prior to receiving Navy TWE but now is considering going in a different direction. He believes he did not receive and offer of appointment from Navy because his ACT was a bit low and that he might not have been the MOC Primary Nominee? He received nominations from 2 Senators and 1 Congressman to USNA. Only one Senator nominated him to USAFA.

Question: How did others find out they were the MOC Primary Nominee?
My DS received a Principle/Primary Nomination from his MOC. MOC called my son on 12/22/16 and told him. Not all MOC give Principle/Primary Nominations, some give USAFA their list and let USAFA rank the list.

With that being said, my DS is still waiting to hear from USAFA. My DS contacted his ALO on 4/1/17 and was told he has an offer coming and to be patient that the process takes time.

My DS has a friend that got the Principle for our district last year and he did not get his appointment until 4/28/16. I don't know how USAFA does the appointments, but I do know that until you have a TWE it isn't over. I also know that several TWE's got appointments in May last year.
Curious - how did the ALO know there was an offer coming? What info did he have access to? Thank you...
The ALO said he called admissions to check the status on DS.
Ours too. they haven't called us back yet,

Congratulations to your DS on such great accomplishments! So many ups, downs, twists and turns on this journey isn't there?
It's always comforting to know we are not traveling this path alone!

More than once I have deleted this SAF app from my phone bc I couldn't take the stress, lol! I've been watching the other academy appointment threads and that's where I saw that some appointees had to let USAFA know by April 15 , their struggle being that they have the appointment but haven't heard back from one or more of the other admissions boards.

We too didn't hear until late April last year, and it was around that time I found this forum. Even though our DS had been to numerous academy related forums and events through the years , no one ever mentioned reapplying or prep schools were an option. He was content to go with Plan B school until someone here reached out to us about MMI.

Oldest is C1C at USAFA, youngest is a recent appointee to USNA. Oldest was wait-listed by USNA (and never offered) after USNA Summer Seminar, Candidate Visit, two nominations . . . much love . . . and basically an apology from the Blue & Gold Officer. Youngest had next to no communication (still none, two Senator noms and we think his appointment is from the Senator that retired so maybe no one called because the office is gone?). In March his USNA portal flipped over and said LOA (we had no idea). A good friend's daughter got an appointment from USAFA in late April of last year after they had given up and started Plan B. I will say that with my oldest, it felt so "all or nothing" that I was shocked to find out that at least a quarter if not a thirds of his classmates were appointed on the 2nd try.

My point? Heck if I know! My experience is only my own - but I share in case it helps. My middle son is at a civilian university - his 2nd choice. So out of three kids, two got their 2nd choice - and love it. The kids that have gotten this far are exceptional. They will bloom where they are planted . . . and the parents like me will laugh at themselves for trying to give up wine for Lent in the middle of this craziness.

Hilarious about deleting the app. This is my second child to apply. I swore I would stay off FB and forums and try to just chill. I made it all the way until March. Last time it made me pretty insane. Nerve wracking!

If no appt comes would you still recommend nwp or any prep school as a free agent over college and afrotc?

I'd agree and say it's really a personal decision that is best made after doing some research in all areas to see what is the best fit for your DS/DD.

The reps at the prep schools seem to be very accessible, and I would be direct about success rates for self preps and get their feedback. At MMI DS was told he would need to have a 4.0 as a self prep. They also said in years past, they had not been as selective about who might have been admitted via the self prep route. We were told Day 1, they have a goal of 100% Academy placement. The AFROTC is incorporated into the prep year at MMI.
Your DS/DD can also always apply for a 3 yr AFROTC scholarship while earning college credit and reapplying to USAFA or other academy.

I don't know which option stands out more to Academy admissions, or if the odds of acceptance are greater with a year of regular college, as there are still other factors that can change in your district from year to year. Look at individual strengths, interests , and needs , pray for wisdom and get in the start gate again !!

Has anyone from TN heard anything yet? I saw one from district 9, but that was through Vice President.

I'm still waiting in IL and it seems as though I'll get some good or bad news over my spring break. Crossing my fingers and toes for good news!!!!!
IL-05 over here. Still waiting too, hopefully some news comes out soon so everybody can plan accordingly.
