a secretary from my congressman's office left me a voicemail and I figured it was because I got accepted. She didn't return my call and a week or so later it came in the mail

See that's the problem with unweighted GPAs, the kids who don't take challenging classes and are not the brightest still get higher GPAs than the all AP kid who does homework for four hours every night just to get 3 Bs and an A. I understand that all schools weight classes differently but come on.

Your test scores, class rank and school profile are the primary components of the Academic portion of the WCS. There is a Magic 8 Ball that admissions uses but it basically wants to see that you have picked the more challenging schedule based on what is available and that you have done well in those courses. It is also an attempt to level the playing field as all candidates do not have the same opportunities based on the schools they attend. This information is sent electronically and is difficult to compare.

It is impossible to look at what a candidate post here and say you are more qualified. People just hit the high points and do not have all of the variables in the equation. Your entire file is reviewed and a "WHOLE CANDIDATE SCORE" is generated. This is the number that is used to compare you against the other candidates. It is calculated based on Academics (60%), Leadership/Extracurricular (30%), CFA (10%).

You also have to remember that you are only competing against the individuals on the same nomination slate. Your file may win certain slates but you could be ranked 5th on other slates depending on who has applied in a given year. There is also no way to predict "how competitive" your district is because it only takes one or two outstanding candidates to apply this year and a district that was not competitive last year can become extremely competitive this year.

After all slates are resolved, you can compete for an appointment off the national waiting list but that competition becomes much more difficult as there are more variables involved, mainly the extra academic boost for college. College students get a significant WCS boost for successfully completing a challenging semester of college.
