Hello, I'm thinking of going to Fordham Universtiy with my AROTC scholarship and I was just wondering if anyone had some thoughts/insight on its ROTC program. Thank you!

Like it's been mentioned in other threads, the school is a bit more important than the school/affiliate's ROTC program. Learn about the school first, then you can worry about the ROTC program. Lots of schools have virtual tours you can do at home, or maybe ask College Confidential or other forums for information about the school to give you a sense of what it's about.

My DD attends Columbia and is part of the Ram Batallion. She is an MS2 and the program has afforded her so many great opportunities from tracing at USMA and Ft Dix, Project GO at San Diego State last summer, running in Fallen Comrade Marathon, seeing VIP types as the cadets often get invited to help with concerts/ Veyeran appreciation events. My husband was a PMS and he has been very impressed!

Hey I was admitted to Columbia for the upcoming fall and I’m between them and Yale. My main concern with ROTC (either Navy or Army, I have both scholarships) is the transpiration to Columbia. Did your DD find that the distance to Fordham is an inconvenience?

It’s not easy for PT in the mornings but if more Columbia and NYU cadets enroll they could possibly do PT on their campus. Overall, it’s a few stops on subway and part of the NYC experience. Sometimes a few cadets get Lyft together if they have their equipment to carry, etc.

Hi! Our DD has Army and Navy ROTC scholarships to Barnard College of Columbia. I know she'd love to connect w/ some other cadets as she makes the decision which one to choose. The Fordham Army cadre have been very informative (and we're an Army family), but it seems like the access would be easier for Navy. She's still deciding between Naval Academy and Barnard.

**Stay out of Morningside park.** It lives up to it's well-earned nickname, "Muggingside Park"
If you don't believe me, google Tessa Majors. Check Compstat Robbery/ Grand Larceny (cellphone snatch is a grand larceny)#'s for 26 Precinct.
That's from someone who was in LE & patrolled that neighborhood. Similar to lots of schools, the college campus is the hole in the donut.
As an aside, several students a year get arrested for behavior permissible on campus grounds except that they weren't actually on school grounds.
Know where the campus boundaries stop (campus police jurisdiction) & where the NYPD take over...across the street can make all the difference.

Not that this has anything to do with Fordham, and by all means keep out of the park, but it reminds me of something that happened to DS while an LT in Las Vegas (he was stationed at 29 Palms at the time). A mugger had a knife to his throat while sitting in his Jeep with the window rolled down. "Your wallet and your car for your life" (or something like that). Somehow DS convinced him to let him out of the vehicle because his pants were so tight he couldn't get his wallet out. The mugging jerk! Three seconds after DS got out of the car, the guy was face down on the ground, arms pinned behind his back and his knife nowhere to be reached. DS called the cops with his free hand.

Moral of the story? Don't ever try to mug a Marine!

My father and uncle both went through ROTC at Fordham and went on to successful lives. I am a graduate of Fordham Prep and I have nothing but great things to say about Fordham and the experience of school in a big city.

My first experience of situational awareness was making the 75 yard journey from the Fordham Road train station to the gates of the university when I was 14. Felt like a hobbit trying to get to the safety of the Shire...

Fordham's "7 Blocks of Granite", the nickname for the football team's O-line in the 1936-1937 season.
Their Right Guard was some guy named Lombardi...#40 in the pic
