Hey,

I'm curious as to whether or not you can use AP scores to satisfy the two required foreign language courses. I speak German fluently, but never bothered to take the AP exam and am curious whether or not it will be worth my time to do so.

Thanks for the information.

There's a foreign language assessment test that you can take in the USAF to document that fluency - I took the Japaneses test and added some cash to my wallet - that's a good thing - nicht wahr? However I'm sure the Academy has procedures in place to help you out.

The Academy 2011-2012 Catalog says:

"Scores received on AP/IB exams are not used for admission consideration. However, if you score well on the AP/IB tests, you
may validate some Academy courses. Some departments administer placement or validation tests once you arrive; earning
high marks on the test may enable you to be placed in an accelerated or advanced course or perhaps receive validation
credit and substitute another course."

You may be able to validate German by passing the Academy's foreign language test and a decent AP score (4/5). I believe the test was online last year. That information came in the 2nd BFE. That being said, the Academy may want you to take another language (Russian, Chinese, Arabic) instead of German. Hopefully, you can validate it with a decent score on the AP test coupled with a good performance on the validation exam. Word on the street is they are going more online this year so keep your eyes open for more information via e-mail directly from the Academy.

Good luck. :thumb:

Our son didn't take the AP test for Spanish but scored high enough on the placement test to validate all of the lower level courses and he started into the higher level Spanish classes as a 4 deg. He still had to take the foreign language classes, just at a higher level. It also enabled him to get a Spanish minor with very few extra classes.

If you are fluent, you could probably validate all the courses for German...although USAFA might put you in a different language.

Good news, either way, is you can make extra money for being fluent in foreign languages. There are a few tests you'll need to take, but the foreign language department knows the process.

How does that work? Does the monthly stipend increase if you're fluent in another language?
