Foreign travel

An excellent challenge for you to figure out as a young adult soon to be on active duty.

Apologies to patient USAFA readers.

I enjoyed reading this as a USAFA reader because I had similar concerns about my brother's wedding in the fall (isn't a for sure date yet so never thought to ask!)

Academic year, you might have more leeway, depending on what weekend liberty (I am surprising myself that I don't know if AF uses same terms) of off-USAFA time you rate. Distance/travel issues may also affect ability to go. Summer, different story.

Plenty of people on USAFA forum who can advise. I am taking my squid self out of here with a cheerful wave.

A brother's wedding is more of a "once-in-a-lifetime" event than a cousin. Also if it's in the fall and not during doolie summer you'll most likely be able to go without issue. Just get the permission and paperwork done early.

They are considering having it on a weekday. Would that be a problem? Also, how far in advance would I need to ask?

I still think you'd be able to go since it's your brother. But you'd need what's called an SCA to miss classes, which is more of a bureaucratic pain in the ass to get than your AOCs permission to leave for a normal weekend. You said you live about an hour and half away. Is the wedding also in that driving range? That would make it easier if you were only missing a day. But regardless, you should probably be bringing this up in August when you get to your academic year squadron.

If it is during the week, or on a silver weekend, then you will need to submit a personal SCA request and potentially a form we call a SSS. I would start the process as soon as you get out of basic or when you know the exact date. Your three degree supervisor will be able to walk you through what you need to do when the time comes.

No; I wouldn't dream of asking for time off of BCT! Actually, I have since talked to them and they say they are thinking they'll need to move the date back even further. My brother is in the Army, so they signed the papers to get married last summer, but would like to have a ceremony at some point. But he's stationed in Alaska and estimating his leave far enough in advance to come back to CO and get married has proven very hard. Military life makes things like this difficult sometimes, as I'm sure y'all have experienced.

I'm sorry for my question, I did not know so I asked. I guess I will not be attending. This is all I was curious about. Thank you all for your help and time!
