Fort Rucker to be Renamed After MOH Recipient Chief Warrant Officer 4 Novosel

Fort Rucker was named for a Confederate. The Army post will now be called Fort Novosel, for a Medal of Honor recipient who rescued thousands | CNN

But for a flight surgeon who gave him a pass when he came up an eighth of an inch short during an exam, Michael J. Novosel Sr. likely would never have become a military aviator.

His son also flew in Vietnam where, "They extracted each other from disabled aircraft during their service there."

Hard to find a better name for their primary helicopter training base. Gonna be hard to call it anything else than Rucker though.

“A few” years ago I operated a flight from Atlanta to Montgomery. I was at the counter getting my paperwork and saw someone with Army aviation wings pin and we struck up a conversation. He spoke about flying in Viet Nam and we exchange fond memories of the UH-1. He told me his name was Mike. Before I walked down to my airplane he gave me his card. I saw the MOH on it and did the palm slap. It was Novosel. A great guy. I cherished that card for years, but sadly it was lost with some stuff during a PCS move.
