Forum app end-of-life

Good Morning

As many of you know, we've had Android and iOS apps for a number of years that some of our members and moderators have used or currently use. For the past few years, it was the primary way that I used the forum. There have been two changes that have caused us to decide that we can no longer support the app. First, our provider of the app has made some changes over the years that make the app more difficult to maintain and cause functionality between the app and the forum to diverge. Unfortunately, there aren't any alternatives to our existing app provider.

I've been considering replacing it for a while, but the mobile experience under the old software wasn't at a place where it was at parity with the app. With our move to the current version of our software, the mobile experience has improved to the point where it's significantly better than the app. Despite years of using the app, I've recently moved to only using the mobile browser. Based on our usage statistics, this is the case for the majority of people, as the number of users of the app has declined. From an operational point of view, it's much preferred to only support a single software for access, both in terms of maintenance and ensuring a consistent user experience.

As a result, we've reached the point where we will be removing support for the app, with a transition period to allow people to move to a mobile browser. Effective today, the app will no longer be available for download from the iOS and Android stores. We will continue to support existing installations until the end of January 2020 (that is, for approximately 3 weeks).

Thank you for your understanding. Please let me know if you have any questions.

I thought there was something wrong with my new iPhone when the Service Academy Forum app was the only one that wouldn’t allow an backup several weeks ago. Apps, even ones that are unwieldy, usually provide a better experience than browsing on an Internet site. Just my thoughts. Sad to see the app go. Still love the site.

I do not understand it all, but enjoy the app myself. Looking forward to however it all works out [emoji106]

RIP...goodbye to my favorite morning ritual: coffee, candle, catching up on the local news and SA forum in my big comfy chair. Kind of startled a little this morning! I will miss it!!

Try using your phone and the regular browser....

Here is the link. I have always preferred this over the app on my phone.

brilliant...and DOH!! What a DERP moment. Obviously my coffee hasn't kicked in yet!

Added the link to my favs on iPhone. So don’t have to login and type the whole URL every time.

I stayed up, watched the app’s data drain not long before midnight EST, deleted the app from iPhone. On to mobile site. Semper Gumby.

Making an “icon” for SAF mobile site on your iPhone home screen - most of you probably know this trick, but just in case. Skip typing in URL, searching, or extra taps to find bookmark in Safari.

Bring up the SAF mobile website in your Safari browser.
Look for the box-with-arrow icon at the bottom.
Select that, scroll until you find Add To Home Screen - but hold on.
Pause for a second to re-name it in the box near the top. I chose SAF.
Make it happen.

SAF now shows up like an app icon. Drag and drop where you wish on your Home Screen or into a folder. You can do this with any website you want fast access to.

I have a Social folder, and I deleted the old SAF app, dragged my new SAF link into the folder. No more nice flag, but we move on.

Sad to see the app go! Is Tapatalk still supported? I tried to follow but it gave me error codes.

THIS is life changing. For real.

As part of this transition, we're no longer supporting Tapatalk. That said, I truly think our mobile browser support has reached the point where an app is no longer needed, and this change will ensure continued parity between mobile and desktop features. We're always open to feedback about how to improve our mobile or desktop experience, so please let us know if you have any.

Sad to see the app go, but I completely understand the reasoning why.
