Friend missed nom deadline

It must be remembered that military law and miltary regulations are quite different than in the civilian world. The level of structure and strict guidelines are what many find attractive in a military environment. The fact that nominal "gray areas" are found within this type of system is, in my opinion, what makes our armed forces the best. There is very little room for interpretation or negotiation of the rules and regulations.

This is how I see the situation (in my humble opinion...) -

The friend who inititated this thread posted that his friend -
was discouraged from not getting into USNA Summer Seminar and decided not to apply
- He was DISAPPOINTED so he decided to QUIT the application process.

Upon receiving an encouraging phone call from his BGO, this student then decides to apply even though he has missed the deadline for the congressional nomination applications. But a deadline is a deadline - should this student be the exception to the rule even though there are thousands of dedicated candidates who abided by their designated deadlines and successfully completed everything on time?

In my opinion, this student doesn't seem to really want to attend the academy because if he did, he wouldn't have let a little thing such as disapointment of his non-acceptance into the summer seminar to prevent him from obtaining his goal.

Am I advising him not to apply? - Absolutely not. He should do what he wants to do. I just think that he should be realistic about it.

Because just as Justamom stated earlier (in case anyone didn't realize this fact!!),
Earning an appointment is between the candidate and Academy admissions.

So this post is just my opinion...

I'm sorry, I wasn't trying to start a commotion, just get some advice or tips from people willing.

If you really believe that deadlines are deadlines it should not matter at all for what reason someone may have missed said deadline (howver trivial you personally may find it). I was also not keen on posting someone's other personal situations on the internet

If any one has any actual constructive help I'd still like to hear it. If you're just looking to put down my friend, give your opinion, fine, but realize that it doesn't influence me at all.

Yet you did.

So you only seem to want "constructive help" if it positively suits your friend's situation??

Telling your friend to be realistic is constructive help - whether you see it that way or not.

And you friend is the one who needs to be "influenced" - not you.

actually i didn't explain other extenuating circumstances that is his own personal bussiness (medical)

and corrrect, I want constructive help that will benefit him. that's not too much to ask! I'd like this to work out as positively as possible :)

actually, you being a parent of a candidate, you should completely understand this sort of situation. especially with your son and his knee injury. sometimes things happen.

Of course. But I just want your friend to prepare himself for the possibility of not getting accepted due to the nomination process. That is why I suggested that he should be realistic.

Then, if he is successful and receives an appointment, he will be pleasantly surprised.

It is the mom in me that wants him to prepare himself for either good or bad news and not just give "positive" advice because it will make him feel better. :)

As for my son, regardless of his injury, he submitted everything early so he didn't miss any deadlines.

A deadline is a deadline. The process of applying to any SA is intentionally a very long, complex and frustrating process. It separates the competitive from the non-competitive records. There are other prospective candidates who are also in your friend's position (missing a deadline) and many who began the application process as early as January of their Junior year in high school (depending upon your state of residency) who have yet to receive a nom.
There will be many who have submitted their applications early, done quite well on the CFA, had glowing recommendations and received multiple noms who will not be offered an appointment.
One option open if their parent is active duty or reservist who meets the criteria is a Presidential nom. Other than that, this being one of the most competitive years, failing to meet a deadline will not bode well for those desiring an offer of an appointment.
Though they could complete the application process and hope for an offer of NAPS or Foundation, I doubt an offer would be made since the question of "Why didn't they receive a nom" may be asked. My advice to your friend, if they are really determined to attend a SA and are applying for the right reasons, would be to apply for next year's class.

Ok, well, he's going to keep pressing on and he does have an understanding of the realistic possibilities here. we'll see what happens. looks like he's doing all he can.

and again as i said, i GET the deadline issue! (I started my application about a year ago...sheesh I signed up to request info in 8th grade. With LOAs and nominations in hand, its paid off to be ahead of the game)
