Although I applied to the Naval Academy, I was not accepted this year. I found out at about the same time that I have been wait listed for West Point. I'm 16th on the National waiting list. I was wondering if I could go to West Point for a year, but apply to the Naval Academy again after that year is over.

Please, do not do that. Please, let that slot go to someone who passionately wants to go to West Point. Go to college and work on making your USNA file more competitive for next year. I cannot imagine Navy would look favorably on someone who attempts to academy hop.

While I have never heard of anybody doing this- I have to question why you would want to. If you want to be in the Navy and you can't get into USNA - there are other ways to get a commission- there are lots of schools that offer NROTC . I suspect that neither a congressman nor USNA would look favorably at this as it would certainly call into question your ability to make a decision and a commitment. For every cadet accepted at USMA there are about 10 applicants not accepted- so if this is indicative of your interest of a career in the Army- do the right thing and do not go to USMA so that one of the others who do want to be in the Army have that opportunity. Either go to USMA and decide that you are going to be an Army officer, or look for another way to get into the navy or You can try again next year for USNA if you have your heart set on it. This plan doesn't sound too promising - let this one go.

Amen!

Not to mention, that switch is an extremely difficult maneuver to pull off, and is by no means a guarantee. I echo what everyone else has said.

Thanks everyone for the comments. My father was saying similar things as you all were saying. After writing that first comment, I thought that going to West Point for a year then hop to the Naval Academy would be selfish if someone else really wanted that spot. I have received a Naval ROTC Scholarship to the University of Missouri, and I will apply to the Naval Academy the following year. I may end up liking NROTC and stay there but who knows. Thanks again.

The candidate on the waiting list who gets a call this next week will thank you forever. You are making a good decision; if you want to serve in the Navy, find your route to commission. Good luck!

I did the whole wait-a-year-reapply from a civilian college and succeeded. There is no reason why you shouldn't have the same luck. That said, most people who have a NROTC at their school find little reason to transfer.
