Funny SA Misconceptions

Today, I went to my local police department to get my background check done. After explaining to the clerk what I needed, she got a confused look on her face and asked me where my recruitment station was. I explained that I wasn't enlisting and that USMA is a college...to which she said she had to go get her supervisor.

Supervisor showed up, looked over the form, and asked me again where my recruitment station was, to which I again explained that USMA is a military college. She tells me (A) that she had never heard of it and (B) that the "United States Military Academy" was probably just a fancy name for some kind of basic training or military program. We went back and forth over this for a while. She eventually understood that it was indeed a college, but then thought that it was ROTC.

It was kinda sad, even the name "West Point" didn't ring any bells...

When in doubt, I ask if they've ever heard of the Army-Navy game and tell them the Army team plays for the school I'm going to.

Maybe we should just carry around the Prospectus and show it to people.

For the USCGA, people generally ask "Oh the Coast Guard Academy! Where is that... exactly?" Its always the same tone of voice. People are either quite jealous about that choice of career, or I have to explain what it is that the Coast Guard does. I generally just say "They stop drug smugglers and rescue people..." and that usually does it. Either that or they ask me what its going to be like jump out helicopters like "In that one movie with Ashton Kutcher". Still, sometimes I even get questions like "So what's it going to be like to be in the navy?" :help:

I was at a track meet today and I was wearing my West Point sweater. A girl from my history class last semester saw it and asked, "Is that the gun place?" I couldn't help but laugh. :shake:

Now, I completely understand that there are very few people who became aware of service academies at birth, so I’ll cut people some slack. It is true that the majority of Americans are clueless when it comes to the military, as they simply have had zero exposure to it.
My first, classic encounter: Years ago, when my civilian parent accepted a job at USMA that afforded our family on-post housing, we told everyone we were moving to West Point. One of my teacher’s responses, “Oh, West Point…..that’s in Annapolis, right?” Riiiight….…

Me: I'm going to west point
sexy girl 1: what's west point
sexy girl 2: it's like a school where they play army
sexy girl 1:mmm that's hot

Wow, you got to talk to Paris Hilton? Hope you didn't lose any brain cells :)

Today in my AP US History class:

Sophomore: So, where are you going to school next year?
Me: West point
Sophomore: Cool. Do you plan on enlisting in the army after you graduate?

...

Me: "so what college are you applying to after you get back from your exchange trip to Germany?"
Friend: "I'm not sure yet. What college are you going to after the Naval Academy?"
Me: "uhhh..."

Its why I suggest you lay low if you get accepted to an SA and decide to go...I regret telling anyone about my appointment and if I could go back in time, I wouldn't tell a single soul. I guess you could if you liked getting all the attention but it sounds pretty uncomfortable. Telling people so far has only invoked feelings of envy or jealousy :\. I even know this cocky brat who lives down the block and is applying next year just because I did . I just keep my mouth shut from now on

oh well

Receptionist: so where are you going to school?
me: the Air Force Academy.
Receptionist: oh, whats that?
me: have you heard of Westpoint? (i figured because westpoint is pretty well known)
Receptionist: Georgia?
me: no, not exactly

On the other hand...

Leaving a school concert last night, a parent asked my D: "So where are you going to college?"

D: "I'll be attending the Naval Academy."

Parent: "That's fantastic. Congratulations and thanks for your service to our country."

I could not have been more proud.

...well, in the defense of the secretary, there is a West Point, GA...LOL!

There's also a West Point, Va.:shake:

Yup, a small town 45 minutes from here. Many times when I tell people where I'll be going to college, they ask, "What? There's a college in West Point? Oh! Are you talking about XXX Community College?"
