FY16 Branching Results

Numbers for FY16 OML, Accessions and Branching are very interesting. I certainly feel for cadets who did not get top choices, but at least the ones posting here sound like they have a good attitude moving forward. Seeing also how the Army really moves top performers around the branches to makes sure all have potential solid leadership.

Is it correct that approximately 20% of those seeking active duty were directed RFD (3722/746)?

Also appears MI was by far top first choice (100 more than infantry) and very close to top as second choice, and top third choice.

Am I reading chart right that 90% of Infantry allocations will come from branch detail (including 63% for MI going infantry) 69% of armor branch detailed, and 60% of chemical corps as well?

Interesting also how Armor was 5th as first choice, but far away top for 2nd choice.

Again I think it is really is fascinating how cadets try and figure out their top branch choices. Thanks for the post.

I'm also surprised Armor is far away tops for 2nd choice. Thought it was Artillery. Different topic: I'm with Bull--I'm looking forward to Sheriff3's rant on SMCs...

I think a lot has to do with the fact that a majority of the cadets that list Armor put it second behind their first choice, Infantry.

While potentially entertaining I am not sure of what there is to rant about. SMC graduates below the line do not displace anyone.
They are in addition to the allocation, not part of it. The "guarantee" of active duty helps keeps SMCs viable, which was the point of Title 10.
Full disclosure, my son will be attending a SMC starting in the fall.

Most cadets at SMC's pay a hefty price (dollars and in stress) for the benefit of guaranteed AD, but they still have to be blessed by the AROTC PMS. As long as the PMS draws a clear line in the sand (sorry LITS), then why should there be consternation?

Full disclosure: my DS was accepted but opted NOT to attend an SMC. for a number of reasons.

PS, Regardless, I am still definitely looking forward to Sheriff's rant. :)

I didn't realize so many were waiting for my rant on this subject. I first posted this on the SMC thread but decided to bring it over here as it impacts mant here as well and this thread gets much more traffic. Well here goes. First off please let me say I have nothing against the SMCs'. I'm certain they , like all commissioning sources turn out excellent, good and bad officers. That being said.....

Here is the law: (only applies to Army ROTC at a SMC)
(e)Assignment to Active Duty.—
(1)
The Secretary of the Army shall ensure that a graduate of a senior military college who desires to serve as a commissioned officer on active duty upon graduation from the college, who is medically and physically qualified for active duty, and who is recommended for such duty by the professor of military science at the college, shall be assigned to active duty.
(2)
Nothing in this section shall be construed to prohibit the Secretary of the Army from requiring a member of the program who graduates from a senior military college to serve on active duty.

The above is an "out", an "exception to the rule" afforded to an SMC graduate that is not afforded to other non SMC Army ROTC cadets. Because of this provision 86 " below the line" ( substandard) SMC cadets will go AD thus displacing 86 non SMC cadets who wanted to go AD and likely had higher OML scores. ALL ROTC cadets have 4 years to prove themselves worthy of AD ( if that's the path they choose). In the end if your OML is not high enough you should be placed in the non AD group like all others . As I and many other have said in the past, "The standard is the standard, no exceptions"! There are several "non-negotiable" circumstances that happen in the military everyday Don't have a high enough SAT/ACT.... no admission into AROTC , GPA goes below a certain level for a certain period of time... disenrollment, fail APFT ....no contract, cannot maintain passing AFPT score while contracted..... disenrollment. To the best of my knowledge in none of these instances can the PMS override the standard and allow the cadet to move on, yet if one goes to an SMC the standard ( OML) is of no concern.

At the end of the day I want the most qualified officer the Army has in its ranks leading our troops, not the one that is promoted simply because of where they went to college.

Perhaps level the playing field across the country, no preferences for SMCs or Academies. Suppose it's worth the debate/discussion.
