Reception Day Class of 2012: June 30
March Back: August 17
First Day of Classes: August 21
Acceptance Day: August 23
Plebe Parent Weekend: March 14 - 15, 2009

PPW during Spring Break was the way it was done years ago. Interesting.

Hi Just_A_Mom

Thanks for the dates! I've learned a lot from your posts from lurking the past couple of months.

So if it's spring break, we can either go up there, or they can come home? I was looking forward to a fall getaway, honestly!

The plebes can go home for Spring Break after PPW is over. For parents, PPW is well worth the trip to West Point.

Maybe the plebe parents can plan to go to a home football game this Fall to make up for having to wait for PPW. Arrive on a Thursday and leave on Monday so you can have Friday to sightsee, Saturday to tailgate, and all day Sunday with your plebe.

+1

Why the change? Anyone know? Seems to me that USMA would have scheduled the PPW during a football weekend in order to boost attendence at the game.

In years past, they purposely didn't put PPW on a home football game weekend. Too many people doing to many activities at the same time in the same space.

The first day of class is before A-Day? That doesn't make any sense...

Labor Day weekend

Looks like Labor Day weekend will now be an open weekend...

WEST POINT, N.Y. – Army has moved its season opening football game back a day in order to retain the Corps of Cadets’ traditional three-day holiday weekend.
Director of Athletics Kevin Anderson announced today that the Black Knights will kick off the 2008 season against Temple, on Friday, Aug. 29, instead of on Aug. 30 as previously scheduled. ESPNU or ESPN Classic will televise the game nationally with kickoff tentatively set for 7:04 p.m.
West Point shifted the date in order to preserve the Labor Day weekend for Corps of Cadets and for their fans. Army has never before hosted a football game on Labor Day weekend.
It will mark the only non-Saturday football game of the year for the Black Knights, home or away. Each of the Army’s remaining 11 contests, including all five home games, will remain on Saturday. Kickoff times for all of those games will be announced later in the year.
The Black Knights’ contest against Akron in the 2007 FirstMerit Patriot Bowl (Sept. 1) previously ranked as the earliest season opener in Army history. This year’s opener against Temple will stand as the first time an Army football team has played a game in the month of August. The Black Knights have opened their home schedule as early as Sept. 6, having done so in both 1997 and 2003.

If the March Back is the 17th, and first day of classes is the 21st, will the plebes be coming home at all between those dates?

Somewhere I read that it is a good idea for parents to bring kids the much needed school supplies on R-Day so they aren't having to fight the lines for paper and notebooks, but if classes begin before then, what is recommended?

Our son's birthday is the 19th and I think he had been hoping to celebrate it with friends at home in the "interim" between Beast and the academic year starting. I guess not??

No, they will be settling into the barracks, getting their computers, and getting ready for classes to start.

I think you mean A-Day...perhaps you could send a care package with a few school supplies (and a birthday surprise ). The New Cadets should be able to receive packages during Reorgy Week. This may be a good question for prospective-net this summer. My son never mentioned having trouble getting school supplies at the Cadet Store last year. He did not need any school supplies when we visited the PX on the Sunday after A-Day.

A birthday during Reorgy Week?! What memories he will have!

oops!

Yes, I meant A-Day. My brain and fingers have not been cooperating the last few days!

So if there is no break to come home prior to the academic year starting, I guess we will definitely want to make the trip up there for A-Day. He is pretty independent when he wants to be, but something tells me he may need to see familiar faces for a day or two.

Birthday memories during Reorgy week? Yes, he's actually going to be turning 18. You, know, becoming a man! :shake: But something tells me when we see him again after Beast, we will see Army Strong, not just a typical 18 year old. Now I am wondering what you send as a birthday surprise to a Plebe during this occasion?

Anonagron -

your son should not plan on coming home until Thanksgiving.
This year classes start before A-Day - if he gets off post on A-Day (not guaranteed) you can probably take him shopping depending on how far they are allowed to go.

My daughter found it pretty easy this year being away at a military school to order her school supplies from www.officemax.com.
She just charged it all and a nice box came two days later for her to pick up.

mom3boys - yep - can't go wrong with food.

A word of warning, I don’t know how they will handle the boodle issue this year, but in the past new cadets could not have boodle until A-day when they are officially plebes. This would be a good question to ask during the summer on plebe-net. When you can send food I have a recommendation for a local boodle company: Cadets, Cakes and Cookies - AKA the “C3 lady”. My son receives a delivery from this lady every month (thanks to my Mom) and he says her stuff is delicious. One of his favorites is her “bugle notes” which are caramel covered Bugles, he says he eats those first every time. At PPW she had a table set up in Ike Hall and we got to taste some of her items, they were yummy! Her website: http://www.cadetscakesandcookies.com/

If you can’t send food to him that week money is always good and so are gift cards. Some options for gift cards:
The cadet store or bookstore: http://www.usma.edu/uscc/dca/Stores/AcademyStores.htm
AAFES (for the PX): http://www.aafes.com/
Ranger Joe’s (for soldier stuff): www.rangerjoe.com
Or any other online store your cadet likes.

Wow, didn't even know they had "boodle companies" - sweet! (Does she send stuff to cadet's homes in other states? Momma thinks she should treat herself to boodle every now and then ).

Seriously, I am so very thankful for your input on this forum. There are so many things to consider and I can see I am going to have to adapt to a whole new mindset having a college-aged kiddo, not to mention the added dimension of the service academy-minded thinking going on here, too. Kinda glad my new WP'er has a younger sib to keep my mind occupied as the other one takes off.

No wonder you all keep saying "hang on for a wild ride"!

Unfortunately I don’t think the C3 lady mails anything but you can ask. She is the wife of an Army officer stationed at West Point so she lives on post. She takes her deliveries to the Central Guard Room and the cadets pick them up there.

The cadet store does boodle boxes too. You can order one during the summer to be delivered on A-day. There will be information about this on plebe net after R-day.

We took our son up to the PX on A-day and bought him a plastic box to keep his boodle in. They need something to keep the mice out . I brought him some homemade cookies and then we bought him other boodle in the commissary. Coming from the west coast we didn’t want to haul a bunch of food that we could buy in NY.

Here are a couple more local boodle companies:

Jamzmom told me about Carolina Cookie. I ordered from them when my son was at NMMI. He loved their cookies. http://www.carolinacookie.com/

Before this forum was created I found the CC service academy forum and I was so excited. It was a relief to have other parents to talk to about this journey and to ask questions of.

I too have a younger son still at home to distract me. He just got his permit so we are going on practice drives!

Now that we're on my favorite subject, here's some boodle to order for yourselves. Fairytale Brownies has a very, very nice sale going on right now. Perfect for sad moms who need practice getting ready for A/I Day.

When you order and ship to one of the service academies, enter the code USFTB and you'll receive a 15% discount on non-sale items. Besides the fact that the brownies are one of the most amazing taste treats you'll ever have, I love to support a company that supports the service academies.
