Gap between commissioning and reporting for duty (AFROTC)

snorkel in Okinawa during that time off.
If you decide to do that, let me know and I'l put you in touch with my son. He's stationed there and knows all the best spots to go snorkeling.
What an excellent opportunity! Hope the OP sees this.
Okinawa was out favorite place to be stationed - best food, best snorkeling: what more does one need? :)

My son graduates in May and supposed to go in October although there is no guarantee it may not be later. His friend who graduated 2 years earlier waitied around one year before going to UPT

No pay or stipends. I believe they can fly Space A. DS was looking into that at one time. He hoped to do a quick "vacation" in Guam. Never came off though.

If they are considered reserve then they have the lowest priority for Space A.

Category VI: Retirees and accompanying family members. This category also includes National Guard and reserve members who are traveling within the continental United States, Alaska, Hawaii and U.S. territories

Hopping can be a hassle. It is cheap, but you have to be very easy going when it comes to planning. Planes break down and you can be stuck there. Additionally as stated they are the bottom of the pool. There might be plenty of room on the way out, but not so on the way back.

In the 20+ yrs Bullet served we never hopped. We heard too many horror stories of getting stuck somewhere and having to purchase a short notice one way ticket back to get back home in time. Our DS is a C130J pilot and he would never dreaming of hopping because he has been there stuck somewhere since the plane broke down and they have to wait days for the part to get there.

There's always a risk. But we hopped a couple of times in my wife's 20+ career and it worked out well (more than half our time was overseas, so we were exploring Asia or Europe so hopping didn't play a role - thank goodness for those Army "family days" that turned 3-day weekends into 4-day weekends!).
To hop, one does need to be flexible and time it right (e.g., do it during the school year if you're without kids or homeschool them). But hopping can be great for single AD members (given their top status), retirees, or these reserved cadets who don't have a schedule to follow. There is a great Facebook page titled "Space A the World" where people post tips or trips they found. For an ROTC grad on a 2+ month reserve status, hopping could be a great way to backpack around Europe.
