General Milley and "the book" ???

"A spokesperson for Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Mark Milley is defending allegations of "secret" calls with his Chinese counterpart, saying the conversations are "vital" to "reducing tensions" and "avoiding unintended consequences or conflict," maintaining that the calls were coordinated with high-level defense officials."

Not a denial. Tells you everything you need to know about whether the allegations are true.

I don't really have a problem with the guy being in conversations with his opposite number on the other side. That stuff happens all the time, but it is supposed to happen with the President's knowledge. Heads of countries use these unofficial connections to get things done all the time so that they can have a public stance of being "tough", but leave some wiggle room for deals to be made behind the scenes. That's how politics works. Even in The White House you can meet with The President without ever having had an official meeting. There are a myriad of ways to have a meeting with no public record of a meeting. ;)

I saw that there are transcripts of all his phone calls over the years.

They should be released.
Along with the transcript of the totally secret , no staff invited or involved , secret talk , between Putin amd Trump.

We have a right to know if treason was discussed or not.

I think that whole matter was investigated sufficiently. ;)

Of course, the Commander in Chief can meet with foreign leaders alone. :)

And now prior Defense Secretary Miller says he didn't know about nor did he authorize the calls.

And deputy chief of staff to the Department of Defense Joe Francescon also stated------

"the policy at the time that there was no senior government engagement with China, owing to their bad acts and efforts."

Interesting for sure.

This discussion is well above my pay grade, but I logged in to SAF today hoping that someone had raised this topic to discuss because I wanted to learn more about this. And you all didn't disappoint. Thanks to the OP for starting this discussion and I look forward to reading more thoughts here. And I really hope we get some answers/transcripts.

Ok. Have to jump in here. I find it disturbing that no one mentioned what the state secret was that President Trump passed on to Putin, or if they did it was buried in a story. President Trump told the Russians that The Islamic State was going to try and target some of their civilian airliners for destruction. As an airline pilot I would be very, very upset if we did NOT pass on such information to the Russians. I don’t care if they are a “rival state”. Innocent civilians were involved and he did the right thing in that case. It was sad that someone felt it necessary to leak this incident, something that did much more harm to the operative involved than the passing of the information to the Russians.
Back to my popcorn and beverage.

Difference between the previously mentioned actions of the Secretaries of Defense & State in the Nixon administration and what Milley did:
  • The Secretaries of Defense and State are Cabinet Members, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs is not
  • The Secretaries of Defense and State are civilians, the CJCS is an active duty military officer
  • The Secretary of Defense is in the chain of command, the CJCS is not
  • The Secretary of State is formally charged with responsibility for executing the foreign policy of the United States, the CJCS is not
  • In addition to the 15 Cabinet positions, there are 7 others that have Cabinet level rank, the CJCS is not one of those

You are all listening, exchanging views civilly, no aspersions cast, no name-calling, no getting too personal.

What’s clear is we have people who care deeply about our country.
+1 @Capt MJ

This thread is newsworthy and timely.

So long as exchanges are non-partisan, not denigrating and focused on actions/policies, the thread is within the rules.

Once it gets ugly, a thread is likely to be locked.

It might be a good idea to put this thread on ice until Gen. Milley has a chance to answer questions. He is scheduled to testify before Congress on September 28.

Then everyone can weigh in: treasonous lying scoundrel or courageous patriot.

Someone commented earlier that he looks like a cartoon character, which I believe is out of line. (I said as much in response to crack about Kellyanne Conway). The image seared in my mind is of Gen. Milley marching across freshly conquered Lafayette Square in his ACU's alongside Ivanka Trump. His face said, "What am I doing here? What are WE doing here?"

Don't quite know where this falls "legally", but I would really HOPE that ANY sitting President (no matter how anyone feels about them) has the authority and right to discuss ANY pertinent matter with ANY other Foreign Head of State that the sitting President feels needs the information , and that those discussions are indeed kept confidential (not out in the news or other media). The fact that it seems nothing is kept private, even when maybe it endangers operatives or agents of the government is troublesome.

When the highest ranking member of our military starts acting alone in what "they" feel is best, then where does it stop. I think if we saw last year what happens if Officers take matters into their own hands with Capt Crozier (I think) who was relieved for cause for not doing what he was instructed and going public. But the CJCS I guess is immune to those standards.
