General Uniform Questions

Hi there.

I have a few general questions regarding the wearing of uniforms while in AROTC. From what I've read from other websites, typically cadets will wear a uniform one day a week (whenever their MS lab is). I'm hoping some people with experience can clarify this.

I have a 3-year scholarship and I am wondering if only contracted/on scholarship cadets are supposed to wear uniforms, or if everyone is.

Also, if I do need a uniform without having activated my scholarship yet, do I have to buy it myself? Boots too? If so, how?

I've heard that each detachment may do things differently too so I'm not sure if there is a standard way for these things to go.

Thanks!

In most units everyone is issued a uniform, scholarship or not. In general you wear the uniform one day a week. If you have a weekend exercise or there are some special events you will also wear a uniform then.

In any case your unit will inform you how things will work when you report if not earlier. Also, you are only allowed to wear the uniform for authorized activities. We could never get DS to wear his for pics, although we did manage once over 4 years.

You're questions for the most part are Battalion dependent.

As an underclassman, expect 1-2 days a week; an upperclassman expect potentially up to 4.

Uniforms distribution is varied as each Battalion ... and a chunk of it comes down to funding. On the extremes: some Battalions only issue uniforms to contracted CDTs; others have the funds and means to equip all CDTs (contracted or not). Most at the very least will provide you with ACUs, which is what you'll wear weekly and out in the woods.

For example at Penn State, all CDTs receive ACUs and TA-50 (ruck, rain gear, etc). However underclassmen get Alice packs and LBEs while upperclassmen get MOLLE 2 rucks and FLCs. The big difference between contracted and non-contracted CDTs is that only contracted CDTs receive ASUs.

I've never heard of a Battalion forcing CDTs to buy their own gear (except out of personal preference to "upgrade" to nicer stuff). Whatever you do, PT, leadership labs, FTX's, etc - the Battalion should be providing the resources necessary for the basic and mandatory ROTC events.

The army will buy you 2 uniforms, pts and boots after your first semester (so jan 2021) for non contracted cadets. Contracted cadets get 4 pairs, boots, full pts and a few other items.
