Get first letter from your Basic?

Ski Mom--will do. It DOES break your heart when the little, itty, bitty, thing that we can do to support our cadet now, writing letters, doesn't pan out. Hopefully by now he has had a basketful. Thanks all....

Okay, got another letter today and it was in the self-addressed envelope I had sent my Basic (Ford from Cobras D). He was glad to get our mail (his letter was written on Tuesday night so must have just gotten first batch that day). We have been sending postcards and letters faithfully everyday, so he must have had at least two on Tuesday. He talked about intramurals where their ultimate frisbee team "kicked @--". They won 11 -1 although I will not mention the other team so as not to concern any other squadrons out there . He has been put on supplements due to being within 5% of weight minimum. He says the pills are gross but hopes they will help him gain weight while he's toning. This means they have at least had height and weight checks and are being helped if they need it. He also mentioned some sort of friendly wager between Basics and Cadre that "allowed?" the Basics to get to bed early that night. Personally, I think going to bed early would have been the result whether the Basics won or lost as it meant the cadre could also get some extra shuteye . He is getting better at bed making and he says he and his roommate Mike (from NJ) "run a tight ship" (although I think he has his services mixed up, unless he means "airship"). Still misses us dreadfully and mentioned that he was more exhausted than ever, but no regrets yet.

Thanks to all of you who are sharing info from your basics, it helps to know that they are all going through similar mixed emotions. Pray for them and keep sending the funny notes - they'll get them soon enough.

We received our first letter today from our DS he wrote it Sunday night and it got to Northern Cal on July 2. He is a Barbarian and for him it sounds like everything is ok. Doesn't really like staring at his plate while eating but he will live with it. He says he has surprised himself at how much he can memorize!! He also can't wait for Jacks Valley. We are already looking forward to the next letter.

We also received our first letter today. What a relief it was to hear that he's in good spirits, humor firmly intact. His feet and legs are sore from standing at attention, but other than that he's doing well. He's getting along well with his roommate from Texas, Brandon, but was disappointed that Brandon didn't have an accent <gg> Still my kid :)

Webguy also caught him on video at intramurals laughing and smiling.

I can tell you I'm a much happier mommy today than I have been the last couple of days! Whew!

Another upbeat letter

Okay, for those of you still waiting for a letter, my generally writing-lazy son has sent #5 to parents, one to grandparents and one to younger brother (who is working at a camp). He has actually managed to remember 3 separate addresses! In his most recent letter he related a tale of triumph in getting the final member of his cadre to "break" (laugh). Of course he was at the center of it and got himself some "extra special attention" with the comment "(name), you have some major issues". He mentioned that his comic attempt did end with the entire flight (Cobra D) cracking up and two cadre having to retire behind a wall to compose themselves.
He also mentions that they spend a lot of time standing and learning to sleep while at attention . Seems like his sense of humor is not only intact, but possibly contagious and growing rampantly!
Anyone who has yet to receive a coveted letter, just hang in there - they are all doing their best! The camaraderie of the groups is helping and 4th of July is tomorrow - Thanks for being a great group of parents - God Bless America, our Basics, the rest of the cadet wing, and God Bless you all!

I always love the stories that come out of BCT from the letters home.

My son, Class of 2013, had a great one last year which I thought I'd share.

One evening at dinner, with the basics eating at attention and staring at the Eagle on their plate, the cadre asked a basic...

Cadre: Basic, do you know how many feathers are on that eagle?

Basic: No Sir!

Cadre: Basic, there are 2011 feathers on that eagle. That is because the class of 2011 is the greatest class to attend USAFA! Don't forget that!

Basic: Yes Sir!

My son: Sir, permission to speak.

Cadre: Speak Basic.

My Son: Sir, I believe you are mistaken.

Cadre: Oh.. and how is that Basic??

My son: Sir, I believe you missed two a$$ feathers when you counted them Sir! Sir, there are clearly 2013 feathers on the eagle, Sir.

Lets just say he accomplished his mission to make the cadre smile but paid dearly for it. He said it was totally worth it! Today, he is making his 2nd jump in jump school and will be home on Saturday for his 3 week break!

Hang in there parents of '14. It DOES get easier! I promise!!

Now that's how you do it...sounds like a cool kid! Hope he gets his jumps in this week to earn his wings. It's always a big thrill for them.
