My son will be off to Advanced Camp this summer and will soon need to pick a branch. He is in my states National Guard as an SMP right now. Will he have the option to pick a unit in the reserves even if he is in the Guard. We are very fortunate we have many units both Guard and Reserve close to his area. Beside in state tuition and a different mission as far as state service has anyone see any draw back or advantages serving in the Reserves over the Guard.

Yes.

Depends if they have a slot in their vacancy list.

Generally, guard has combat arms branches mixed with some support
Reserves is all support

IMO reserves is better for finding slots/money to travel. Also, it's easier to switch branches. Literally, all I need a 4187 and I can be a LG officer whenever. Units in the guard (state-depending) seem to have better morale. There are some pretty high-speed NG BCT/divisions.
