My DD indicated that she has an IEP on her DODMETS. We live in the state of PA and they use Gifted IEPs to accommodate students. I am worried that this will disqualify her as there was no place to indicate that the IEP was for her gifted/enrichment designation and I see that IEPs are a disqualifying condition. Anyone know how this will be addressed?

It will all come out with a personal statement explaining. My son had a head injury and was given “extra time” on tests during recovery. It needed explaining but DODMERB understood. You can be proactive and stand ready with a letter from the school indicating the nature of the IEP or even draft a statement. We did upload our letters with the initial DODMERB because all was related to his head injury recovery. They may ask for a statement describing the nature of the IEP.

Thanks. Yes, we have digital copies of her most recent GIEP, so I assume that will be sufficient. It just seems odd that they would not exclude the need to 'disclose' a GIEP. My DD wanted to be answer open and honestly to the questions.

Curious how this process went? My son has a GIEP. Within that document, there are some accommodations that have mostly been carried over since elementary school for ADHD. We've always just left it in place for "just in case" scenarios, but wondering now if it will be a problem.

Welcome new member of half an hour or so.

If your son is planning on applying to service academies, you’ll want to ensure if he is performing well without the ADHD accommodations, that all diagnoses and plans are brought up to date. That will save time down the road, if his current situation is updated. Be proactive rather than reactive. Less painful.

I’ve posted the military medical accession link below.

When the guidance counselor submits required items, they also report on IEPs and accommodations currently on record. See sample USNA link.

Look up the “medical considerations” or similar on SA websites. This is the “short list” of common DQs. USNA sample provided.

Thanks for that information. It is very helpful. Performance has been good. I'm going to get in touch with the school and see about getting the GEIP changed and then we'll be good for the 12 month window on that end. He's already good on the medication front.

We are in PA with a GIEP too. My son is a Junior It would be nice if there was a spot to distinguish a GIEP from an IEP. In elementary school it pulled him out of class a few times a week to go do special projects in the gifted classroom with other kids, and helped get him accelerated in math. In HS they just have to set a goal, and they have access to the library (where the gifted teacher is), pretty much whenever they want, and they are part of the Enrichment club.

I have a follow up question. We checked in with our pediatricians office. We switched offices last year, and their records have no mention of ADHD with what was transferred into their EMR from the previous office. This goes back 7 years I think she said.

So basically, our current physician has no ADHD diagnosis on record. No medication during that time. No other medical interventions. We have a GIEP vs an IEP. The GIEP did have some accommodations (I'm getting those removed), but could be argued that it is not the same as an IEP. As NavyBrat mentioned, majority of the document is about the enrichment piece, with maybe 5 sentences of accommodations.

Just wondering how we would handle this as far a reporting? It seems like medication is the biggest factor in not getting a waiver, but I am wondering the how the GIEP would be handled? It seems like it could go either way depending on your point of view of whether it needs to be disclosed or not?

I have no official opinions to offer. Just gut feelings.

If your daughter is a candidate, she should contact her assigned DoDMERB tech to clarify if she needs to report a GIEP, making clear it is a gifted program and not an IEP for any condition in the categories they are concerned about. I think we had a poster in the last few cycles get that clarified with DoDMERB.

If anything asks if she has been diagnosed with ADHD, I always advocate for the truth. It will take some explaining, and your current provider can probably provide documentation about the lack of documentation from a previous provider, confirm no Rx and current state.
