I have a good friend graduating the entire SEAL pipeline soon and headed off to a team. With how great of an accomplishment this is, I am looking to get him a nice, memorable or functional gift - not the typical US Navy challenge coin or T-Shirt off Amazon. He has put an incredible amount of dedication and sacrifice the last few years training up to this, so I’m hoping to get something lasting.

I’m an Army guy so don’t know too much about Navy or NSW culture, but I would appreciate any recommendations or insight!

I don't know what the regs are with those folks these days, but the absolute coolest thing I ever saw on a frogman was
a little tattoo, no bigger than a half-dollar. It depicted a black seal balancing a red ball on its nose.

I never got a tattoo, but that one was just cool.

Thanks for making me think of that guy. Tell your friend congratulations and to try to resist the urge to write a book when he gets out. :)

One of my go-tos for major milestones is a handmade wooden keepsake box, with the SEAL Trident engraved, maybe with the name, class number and date engraved on a small brass plaque. You can find them online at Etsy or military memorabilia stores online. Since you’re an Army guy, maybe you know “that guy” near the base/post everyone uses for custom shadow boxes, coin racks, etc.

I’m not talking about a footlocker big box, but much smaller, for a desk or dresser, something you put special things in from your career. I was given one when I was commissioned by my two WWII vet Navy uncles, with the Navy officer crest, name and commissioning date. Various pins, insignia, collar devices, mess dress studs, tie bar swaps with Royal Navy, CO name tags, my first Ensign bars, a command pin from a retired admiral which I wore, 9/11 survivor pin, etc. It’s still on my dresser, a bit banged up from PCS moves but still serving.

That tattoo is apparently a real thing with SEALS.

My conditioning coach in college (back in the 1970s) was a former SEAL and he had that exact same seal tattoo with the red ball on his arm.
