gifts for cadets

Can they wear those instead of their issued boots?

After Beast you can. During Beast it can vary with your leadership but I heard people have to bring their boots next year to Beast so it will be up to those instructions.

Either way, both of them together weigh less than one of the standard issue boots. They are extremely comfortable and will pay off during the academic year and summer training after Beast. They sold really quickly here and everyone who has a pair LOVES them.

Maximus: Civilian stores will be more expensive. They cost roughly $80 at the C-Store here.

C-Store?

convenience store just can't be right

Good guess on it not being convenience store. :shake:

It's a store here that sells issued items along with a variety of West Point label items and random stuff. Its our convenience store in the cadet area and where most people bought their Nike boots from.

I actually gave my Plebe several pair of Under Armour compression underwear for Christmas. Not very exciting, but he said they were great during Beast. We just bought him some long underwear and he also requested some bath towels that were larger than the issue ones.

The cadets at USMA like prepaid accounts at some of the restaurants in Highland Falls that deliver.

Under Armour great idea. I sent several pairs of UA briefs in the first care package during plebe summer. And thanks for reminding me. I will get some for Christmas, too! Plebe requested the UA "long johns" be brought up when we visited in October.

Gifts are tough. Plebe's i-pod is here at home. He does love his i-phone. He just doesn't have much use for traditional gifts. Cold hard cash is always popular.

How about airline gift certificates? Sometimes they want to go places besides home...it's nice to have something to wrap!

Good idea. I also just saw this on another forum, suggested by a mid. Extra black socks and white boxers. Back to Academy in search of UA underwear again!

Here's another thought. A dry cleaner gave me some emergency buttons this summer. They are on pin deals like the pins come on that you get when you attend any type of convention.......you just pin the button on and presto. Son mentioned that he would love to have such a thing rigged up with uniform buttons. Then he'd have a quick fix, and could do the sewing later. (Which, by the way, I simply cannot imagine him doing at all!)

So, on my next trip over Army Navy weekend, I plan to get some extra uniform buttons at mid store and see if I can make these. Stocking stuffer.

A nice flashlight-small, with a red filter if you can find one. A nice pocketknife-the leatherman does not always work. A cheap digital camera for beast-my son's was destroyed, and a nice one after. The facebook photo postings are amazing...you can tack your cadets activity almost daily.

You can't bring a camera to Beast. The pictures that were taken were from Cadre's cameras.

pedro4 - how did he post to facebook during Beast? New cadets don't have access to computers.

Beast pics

Re pics from Beast: The West Point Parents page posted tons of great pics from Beast and this was part of our Where's Waldo search. The Commandant also published pics on his Facebook page. http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#/WestPointParents?ref=nf

The suggestion for the red filter flashlight is good. I had forgotten about that. We got one for our New Cadet that is worn on your head. Sounds goofy but keeps your hands free.

Could have been the cadre posting pictures. My squad leader took many pictures of us during some of the training and put them on facebook.

Red filter is for using the flashlight at night without affecting your night vision.

Sorry-he only posted pictures after Beast, not during-but he was allowed to have and use his camera during beast. It was one of those $40 cheapo cameras that was somehow laundered. After beast I sent a nice digital and my plebe posts all kinds of photos to his facebook page. Several of his fellow plebes do the same and it is a great way to track the day to day life there. I continue to be amazed at the quality of the experience he is having there. Every week there is some new experience, challenge, famous person to meet, etc...

Gift Ideas

There is a uniform garment protection device that is on the market now that has done well with Naval Academy Midshipmen and grads. They have some options for personalization as well. www.TheCoverBag.com
