During plebe summer or even during the year.. Are you allowed to wear contacts? Because I have heard that you can't wear contacts and they will issue you glasses if you don't have any..

During Plebe Summer, you do not wear contacts. They will issue you BCG's on I Day (BCG's= Birth Control Glasses since they're so ugly!) I think even people with their OWN glasses wear BCG's.

After Plebe Summer, you can wear your regular glasses or your own contacts.

The main reason Academies don't allow contact lenses during the plebe summer is due to hygeine regions. There simply isn't time in the day to properly care for contact lens use, especially if you go to the field.

Some would argue that those who wear extended wear lenses wouldn't have this problem, but you really probably shouldn't even wear extended wear lenses overnight as it increases your risk of infection from somewhere in the range of 1 in 10,000 to something like 1 in 5,000. An infection is definately not something you want to deal with during plebe summer, so just go with the BCG's for the summer.

How come they don't let you wear your own contacts or even your own glasses?
In that case should I bring my own glasses?

from Induction day on you will be wearing the glasses they issue you. I think you can wear your own glasses or contacts once the academic year starts. However, there is no option to wear your own during plebe summer...sorry. They will be asking you for your prescription so they have your nice new navy issue glasses ready for you when you check in :)

My son sent in his perscription and they still didn't have his BCG's on I day. They took his regular glasses. He went half of plebe summer with no glasses. He managed to shoot expert at the range before they did a follow up exam and then ordered him to wear glasses. They are ugly, but it is only for summer.

My Mids prescription was wrong in the BCG's. He was allowed to wear his own glasses until a new pair of BCG's arrived. He also was able to wear his contacts toward the end of Plebe Summer when he was at sports practice. Remember every company is different and what happens for some Plebes may not be what happens for you.

I know of a plebe that their BGC's broke during Plebe summer and they were able to wear their own glasses for the remainder.

Take both your glasses and your contacts. They may not let you wear them but then again you may get lucky.

Thank you for all the insight you all have given! I appreciate it very much. :thumb:

How come? Because you belong to the Navy.

Plebe Summer is largely a crash course in "You are in the Navy now"! It's a "shock and awe" approach to getting the independent civilian out of you and the esprit de corps/military life into you.

There are exceptions to the rule about your own glasses, but from the moment you walk through the doors of Alumni Hall on I Day, you do what the Navy tells you to do. If they say--all plebes wear the glasses WE give them, well then that's the rule.

After parents weekend, our plebe went back to wearing his own contacts, but Plebe Summer is all about letting go of YOUR stuff (realistically and symbolically) and getting into Navy "stuff"-every way you look at it.

Oh okay that makes a lot of sense!
Thanks for letting me know! I understand a lot better now.
