Go away Sandy

I saw the cover of the NY Post today, and I have to say shame on Bloomberg! For those that don't know, the city for the marathon has taken power generators to light up the tents for the marathon, meanwhile gas station are closing and people are starting to freeze.

I wonder why there is no outcry regarding FEMA and Red Cross?

Gov Christie has been awesome

He has been everywhere. The Shore, (despite those wierdos from the Jersey Shore) is our treasure. Its more than the millionaires homes. A lot of good people hurting. Two hours for gasoline last night. I was lucky to get it.

Hey thanks to Missouri, your Public Service crews are working in my town. Seen a lot of out of state Utility Trucks - thanks USA!!!

Norwich,

I have to ask, have you heard about this:http://www.waff.com/story/19981857/some-nonunion-ala-crews-turned-away-from-sandy-recovery

The fact that they turned away non-union workers from another state is despicable. Seriously, they are saying the unions mean more than turning on the electricity.

Bullet's mother who is N stage cancer is in a hospital that is living off generators still today. (Ocean County)

My Mother who is 75, my brother and sister in law still have no electricity. (Monmouth County)

Bullet is going up tomorrow to be there with his 80 yr old Dad, who has electricity will be doing the un-thinkable, carrying gas containers he will fill in MD because we know his Dad hasn't filled his gas tank, and spending 4 hrs in a gas line is not their priority when his mother needs them and has limited time left.

Shame on Red Cross, Shame on FEMA, Shame on Bloomberg for using generators so the NYC marathon will occur instead of using it to get stores and gas stations open.

Our cousin, who is an NYC native (ARMY, now in DC as an attorney for the justice dept) even asked wonder how many NYers without water will go to this tents to get water?

It is going to get worse still because the weather is expected to get colder in the next few days. They are living with water and 40 degree nights,,,come a few more days it will be water and freezing temps.

Just spent most of today working at a Red Cross Shelter near Ft Dix NJ. Abut 160 people. Mostly people from Seaside Hgts and Pt Pleasant Beach, NJ. A Korea Vet and several under 6 months old.
EVERYTHING pales in comparison to how utterly destitute these folks are. Most arrived with the clothes they were wearing. Anyone had a bout of insecurity or anxiety? Spend a few days in a shelter with no info on your home and the anxiety will come into full bloom. Please remember those still in shelters in your prayers. They are there because they do not have the friend/relative option. They are well cared for, but a shelter is a far way from normalcy.
The Red Cross has folks there from Michigan, Kentucky, Illinois, and even one from Calif if I recall correctly. They are genuine angels.

I did not hear that story. I have heard that not enough is being done along the coast from people I work with. I think they want to fix the interior first becasue it would be quicker. I have seen armies of work crews from other states.

People are getting desperate. No gas. No milk. Limited food. 50 cars in line for Burger King.

DS was able to call from Ranger school. He had called five times before one of our cells finally worked. He was worried. We had damage and we just got power. We can stay in the home. Some people at work lost homes. I have some damage to mine but not as bad as many others.

We may have a Northeater with snow on tuesday.

Nor' easter brewing in Canada. Some estimate its arrival by Wednesday of next week. If that happens, it could further complicate the recovery.

Before your level of outrage goes too high about them turning away help: are you sure that it happened? If you read the story- maybe not (imagine an overblown story making it's way around the internet- who could believe that::eek:?)

From the WAFF story you are quoting:
"At this stage, it is not clear who is alleged to have turned the crew away and the company that employs the affected workers has denied the claim. IBEW local leaders in New Jersey have reiterated what has been the long standing record of our union –in times of crisis all help is welcome and we pull together with everyone to meet the needs of the public. We have communicated this to the office of New Jersey Governor Christie as well," said IBEW President Ed Hill.
From al.com- referencing the other company (Huntsville Utilities) that this allegedly happened to: - http://blog.al.com/breaking/2012/11/huntsville_utilities_denies_cl.html#incart_river_default
Bill Yell, spokesman for Huntsville Utilities, said nine of his employees are currently helping with recovery from Hurricane Sandy and had no union-related issues.

"That's a rumor," he said. "We are starting work this morning with Long Island Power Authority. We were headed to a New Jersey utility but they had all the crews they could handle."

I just heard on line these utility workers that I linked were being called SCABS by NJ workers. Actual video. SO yes, bruno, I heard them screaming. I am also a Jersey girl, with friends along with family in Middlesex, Monmouth and Ocean. They are still without electricity.

Leave my link alone, how about Norwich saying BK has 50 people in line, or the pictures of people dumpster diving in NYC.

No offense, but notice your link is http:// blog ....BLOG. Mine was tied to a news org. BLOG is opinion...granted the MSM can also be seen that way too, but still it isn't a blog. My link was Decatur not Huntsville. Huntsville is in Long Island NY, not Seaside Heights, NJ. Traveling from Seaside to Long Island by car is about a 3 hr car ride. They are not the next town over. The Huntsville scenario is apples and oranges because they are not in NJ. They do not know what Decatur is working with.

Snow on Monday, OMG!

No offense to those that survived Katrina, but the fact is that was August, we are looking at people, especially the elderly freezing to death.

I am off to the grocery store, not for me or us, but for Bullet to take to his father, because between Sandy and his Mother, I bet he has no food in the house. Your post about BK made me realize the real impact.

Let's be honest, stores are closed, look at it from another perspective...parents with babies...no diapers, no formula.

1 more week of this I don't want to think about.

And 40 degrees tonight with no heat for many.

I heard something similar to this from a NJ firefighter after 9/11/01... had some issues with the FDNY folks, I was surprised to hear.

Went to A&P grocery store last night.

All perishables had been thrown away. There were many canned foods available, but whole sections of store Were empty. I said to the cashier this looks like Russia in the 1980s. She said "Poland, I grew up there."

Hey I have no complaints working from Mom and Dad's computer. I dont have it that bad compared to others.

Bruno,

maybe this link will make you see how bad it is
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=reUi7ncHduQ

If the link does not work, try putting this in:

Stranded New Yorkers Are Defecating in Apartment Buildings

These are real people telling real stories. Can you imagine the smell?

NJ and NYers are not like LA, AL, FL, SC and NC where this is a way of life for them every yr, They are accustomed to snow, not rain. I have yet to get in touch with my Mother. I know she is fine, or at least I knew she was fine on Wed. My brother and SIL texted using their smart phone saying they had no electricity. I haven't heard from any of them since Wed, because I am sure their phones are dead now.

Norwich,

One of my friends in NJ said on her FB stop beacching about anything and everything, you are alive, your kids are alive, be thankful for that. She got her electricity back today...she lives 5 miles from my Mom, I am hoping Mom will be back on line by tomorrow. Mom at least heeded my guidance...I told her to light her gas fireplace before the storm hit. SIL said she did and so Mom has a heat source. She is also a big time golfer, and freezes water bottles for golfing, so she has water. Finally, her stove is gas, so she can cook food too. My ILs on the other hand do not have a fireplace, and their whole house is electric. SOL.

What I'm questioning is your link to turning away help because it isn't union which from what I can tell is Internet bologna and which your own article tells you if you read it.

I understand exactly how hard it is: Read post #42from this morning - I managed to get hold of my family on the South Shore of Long Island ( Nassau County - East Rockaway) - which by any stretch is pretty well flattened with 3 feet deep in water in the house, Sewage in the street, no power, a Boat in the front yard and no water- and which has been told likely won't get any of the above for a couple of weeks. Neither the Governor nor anyone else is going to make it be summer time, nor are the resources available going to get everyone hooked up with power in a few days - so if you have elderly parents there- then I would bring them home with me.

Bruno,

We live in VA, not exactly around the corner, or even next town over.

My MIL is N stage, maybe 2 -3 weeks left. The option you are suggesting isn't an option. They are trying to get her home to die in her own bed, and can't because of Sandy. Bullet is going to Lowe's on his way home tonight to pick up things for his father that are no longer available. I am going to get food for him to take because he is 80 yrs old.

Still the fact is whether you think I am blowing up a story or not is not the point.

Leave the utility issue alone, do you think that the NYC marathon should be run? Are you not appalled at the fact people are dumpster diving for food in NYC, state troopers are protecting gas stations and a snow storm is on the way? Does none of this hit a concern?

Do you not have issues that Red Cross and FEMA are nowhere to be found?

FWIW, My SIL is in NYC for work and she can't get back to NJ. Bullet's aunts and uncles are in their 80's too, so they are no help...hence why he is going tomorrow to carry the burden. We don't know if he will be back on Tuesday (planned) because he might not be able to get gas for the car to come home. It is @210 miles each way.

My family on the South Shore of Long Island in Nassau County reported in late last night :
"devastating flooding and sewage system is backed up. Supposedly won't get fixed for 6 months. A lot of damage. Boats landed on people's front lawns all over town. Thousands of cars that won't start. People's basements flooded and up to first floors. Sewage floating in the streets. A lot of damage and a lot of homeless families right now. It's all quite terrible. They say we won't get power for up to 2 weeks. No gas stations are open".
And yet - some idiot thinks that they should still run the NYC Marathon this weekend. I guess as long as they don't drink any Big Gulp's while they are running, the Marathon won't be a diversion of resources from the clean up.

Yes I am concerned -as I was at 0700 when I posted this above. No, I don't think that they are turning back non- union utility crews. No, I don't think that it's going to be over in a week (Tuesday) and until they get power to stations- if it's like Long Island - they can't get Gas. Good luck to Bullet.

Well, they finally canceled the marathon. Maybe these generators will be put to some good use now! :thumb:

The gas problem is primarily related to the power outages. Bullet will be fine if he simply tanks up a bit farther south in NJ. Outside the immediate shore area, most power is back.

Your husband will be ok finding gas. If he tanks up a bit farther south in NJ, he will find all he needs. The gas problem exists in areas without power... a lot of NYC... and people flocking to the few stations with power.
Not sure what you mean by Red Cross not being there. I volunteer with them and know of three shelters in my immediate area with lots of people. Beyond the people sleeping over at a shelter, many more come in just to get a shower/meal/get out of the cold.
