Got a Letter of Assurance Today!

Question 2

No idea for sure, but remember this place is run by level headed adults who see nonsense frequently. One can only assume they take those types of communication with a grain of salt...if it seems to have some truth, wouldn't they investigate? Most of the time I would guess they see it as the "nyah nyah nyah" that it is. However, this is just my opinion.

EG,

To answer your Q #2: During my security clearance checks, they also interviewed me, asking standard questions like "have you ever been in trouble with he law?", or "anything we should know about that?". Your friend should just answer truthfully and honestly. The situation your frined describes sounds rather minor, and shouldn't be a factor.

However, hide something and you'd be surprised how easily they can find it! Just be truthful, and let them kow the real you, warts and all!

BTW, warn all the people you put down as references that they will be contacted. Nothing scares them more than some Governement agency guy calling them up out of the blue wanting to ask them questions about you (they get those "Am I in trouble for knowing this guy" thoughts...)

The background check is pretty light. There won't be indepth interviews with relatives, like you get with a TS clearance (typically done by OPM).

I would not tell friends of friends calling or email admissions offices to decide who is deserving of an appointment. Those opinions have little weight and don't always reflect well on the person doing the reporting.

Be completely open (although I don't remember an interview for clearance on the cadet level until later during my time there). If you try to hide anything, even small things, it will come up again. It's interesting to have the relatives and friends call up to talk about that "FBI" agent who interviewed them, even if it wasn't the FBI.

Pima talking....

When Bullet was graduating and getting ready to be commissioned, I was in college also, he had listed me as his fiance for his security clearance. I was never interviewed, however my advisor at my college was (obviously he put my contact as college address). One day the advisor came up to me, and said I just received a phone call about you from somebody in regards to "Bullet", who is he and why are they calling. Bullet never told me about him going through the process (lived 150 mi. away) so I had no answer until I got to speak to him. This is why he is saying they may or may not dig now when you go into the academy, but they will prior to commission so make sure you are honest...b/c they will find out.

BTW went back to our hometown and saw our friend who was also a ref. and he had been called that exact same week, Bullet didn't tell him either...another reason he says give references fair warning!

mom3boys is right, there is a section about it for USNA in their admissions book. It's basically to make sure you don't have any police reports (particullary felonys) and a background check to make sure you don't have ties to any terrorist organizations or things like that so you can be given access to classified material. We arn't talking about a top secret security clearence like your dad was talking about. For those they will call someone you know from just about every stage of your life. A former cadet had to get a high level clearence and half the cadet corps got phone calls asking about him.
I would think that WP or any academy would handle that sort of thing the same way your commander (I'm guessing you're in ROTC) would handle a cadet saying that about another cadet. It would be looked into but without any real specific reason (like violating UCMJ codes) to take action, wouldn't. Without reason to believe there is a more serious problem or it is a pattern I think admissions would just dismiss it as a spiteful person trying to get back at someone.

I received the appointment today! It was very nice looking... and of course more paperwork! Can anyone tell me if the Naval Academy comes with a nice letter of appointment... like USMA

Congrats EG from the USNA side....now about that avatar you're using.... hmmmmm.
