Govt shutdown Round 2

The date that I joined the forum, doesn't matter. You cannot discredit someone just because that person hasn't been around for "too" long. Besides the point.

Yes, my odds are that he does go home. Most likely will still get paid for however long is the shutdown. Basing off of precendence in 2013.

Wow, take a few days off and see that the majority of out CGA posters are Banned!!!! What the heck??? I have said it before and I will say it again, SHUT DOWN THE GENERAL DISCUSSION PART OF THIS FORUM. 99% of this forums' problems come from this section. I will say I was thoroughly entertained by some of the comments and it took all that I have to not jump into the fray.

Oh crap I guess I'm not as disciplined as I thought....Dansi, This forum is open to all and welcomes most, especially those with valid up to date information on SA, SMC and ROTC issues and information but the question begs... what exactly brought you to our little slice of internet heaven? You stated you are 28 so I am guessing you are not a parent of a cadet or midshipman. You have contributed nothing to the forum other than that on the general discussion part. Are you here to stir up some sh!t and then watch the fallout? Just curious, please enlighten me.

Because its so timely I'll address the Trump comment first:

Greatest CEO.... me thinks not. http://money.cnn.com/2015/08/31/news/companies/donald-trump-bankruptcy/
Donald Trump brags about how well his businesses have fared in bankruptcy. And in fact, no major U.S. company has filed for Chapter 11 more than Trump's casino empire in the last 30 years. Being a serial filer of bankruptcy hardly qualifies one as being any kind of CEO other than bad.

Later if I have the time and interest in the topic I will gladly have a go with you on:

Catholic Church
Undocumented Aliens
Same Sex Marriage
Affordable Health Care Act
And my personal favorite " EQUAL CHANCE TO BECOME UNEQUAL"

OBTW I live in a state that has medical and retail marijuana sales, and I voted for both...shall we have a go on those as well?

No, I will not have a go at you on those various topics. My points are stated, you are entitled to your opinion. If you wanted in on the fray, you should have responded earlier. We already established that this forum is for the government shutdown.

Yes, I am not a parent of a cadet or a midshipmen, I am a Veteran. I am sure Veterans can provide advice to prospective cadets of the service academies and of ROTC.

"If he and Tip O'Neill had been truly responsible, they would have programed in some kind of increase in the age of eligibility. Taxes will not do it alone. Try raising age of eligibility for Medicare and Social Security by 1 month per year for 20-24 years. It should have been done years ago.I'm 58 and can easily kick butt for another 10 years."

cb, I think the Gipper and Tip didn't imagine that they would be the last Chief Executive & Speaker of the House in American history who would be civil ton one another and work for the country's best interest, rather than their "base" (which is all too "base" nowadays in my opinion.

"By raising retirement age, we also soften the demographic problem you mention. Immigrants are helping immensely. Read up on the demographic timebomb which is slowly unfolding in Europe, Japan and China. Americans are like rabbits compared to them. This may explain some of the newfound generosity of the Germans vis a vis refugees from the Middle East."

Oh I agree that adjustments to Social Security would strengthen the program immeasurably, but you need politicians willing to work together to get these type of thing accomplished. Simply keeping the government operating through a Continuing Resolution appears to be the the greatest measure of diplomacy and governance today's Congress can muster.

And "immigrants" has become a curse word. I thought with the collapse of the Know Nothing Party of the 1840s and the Ku Klux Klan of the 1920s this kind of attitude would be gone from American politics for good, but I was clearly wrong.

As for the Germans, their welcoming of Syrian refugees has more to do with the national pastime of Holocaust Guilt (the dominant emotion in Germany post-1945) and pacifism (2nd most popular emotion, post-1989) than any recognition of their demographic problems.

Seriously, I think the greatest problems of the century won't be Radical Islam or China, but global demographic changes, i.e. decreases in population not just in the developed world. Even the Arabs (yes, the Arabs!) are having smaller families.

And the greatest boon to future economic prosperity are the American Frackers, whose actions will change history far more than the US invasion of Iraq in 2003.

But I digress. Travis Shaw of the Red Sox just blasted a 2-run homer in Yankee Stadium so I have to down my drink and freshen it a bit. No more politics for me tonight.

A shut down really bites. Doesn't matter if you are a paycheck to paycheck or have money in the bank for an emergency. The feds are not a one sz fits employer when these shut downs happen. I have seen the whole essential and non essential terminology get redefined right before it blew up and the union jumped all over that ant pile. Some fed divisions do not have all wages funded through the feds. So imo how is this money not distributed to the employee? They are payed for by the affiliated industry the feds regulate. After so many days in unpaid status things like health and life insurance are effected. What does that mean? The employee must pay the entire cost of the insurance in order to have it not cancelled. Another ant pile the union jumped all over. My thoughts at the time... I hope I don't die on the job today, no yes die cause if I end up in the hospital with a lapsed policy it will cost my family more. There is also the problem when essential employees still have to pay for their transportation and per diem needs, Contracts are not renewed industries regulated by the feds still have to operate. It is big flipping mess.

I know some might be saying... cry me a river, but there are lots of complications not everyone understands and cause lots of unnecessary stress on the essential employee still coming into work everyday.

I will say though about how your State has both medical and recreational marijuana use: I am totally fine with that.

As I am sure you've read my previous comments, I am a Anti-Federalist and believe that power in the hands of the States is a good thing. So if your State decided to legalize marijuana that's completely fine and I am glad your State is leading the charge on that issue.

I'm sure that's not what you thought my position would be and you probably wanted a argument on that issue but don't judge a book by its cover.

I am a Veteran. I am sure Veterans can provide advice to prospective cadets of the service academies and of ROTC.

Being a veteran means you served.

Depends on your experience, you have none or many advice to give "to prospective cadets of the service academies and of ROTC."

I am going to stay on topic

UGGH!

You obviously do not know how this will work for govt employees. Yes, maybe we will get paid, but:
1. The MoCs have to say they will pay back the salaries during shutdown while they are at home!
~ You know what the word ASSUME means right? Make an A$$ out of U and Me.
2.My mtg company does not care. They want the money on that due date regardless. Same with my insurance, and where I purchase food, heck don't even get me started on how my DS2 monthly college bill is due.
~ Statistically most Americans live paycheck to paycheck.
~~ GS employees cannot for most cases apply for unemployment. They now have to hit their savings to survive.
3. I believe that they will push this off to December. We will go through this again.

Dasani,
You have stated you are 28 on other threads.
May I ask if you are a govt employee?
~ Can you afford to pay mtg/rent, car pmt. insurance, utilities, etc out of pocket if they go 2+ weeks?
~~ Leave the payback issue aside. This is all about living through your savings as a GS. Sure, chances are high they will pay back, but come 10/1... my mtg company wants their money. That is coming from my savings.

You either have an amazing amount of money in savings or living with the folks! JMPO.

I am not being rude, but I am with Sheriff, regarding what is your motive/goal here?

Yes, I think you have valuable experience from a guidance experience as a veteran, but you don't post anywhere here, except off topic.

JMPO, but I feel like you are looking to fight, and not to support candidates/cadets/mids. Why not use your experience as a vet., be it officer or enlisted to guide our young posters on the SA/ROTC forums when it comes to career fields?

This site has many members, but overall it all about the candidates and cadets. If you want to fight politically, than go to baseops.net or collegeconfidential.com. If you care about them, than step up to the plate as a veteran and give them insight on how the AD world works.
~ The off topic to me is like buying fries with the burger. It is an add on, and not the main meal.

Yes, I have a trust fund with a lot of money. However, I spend my money wisely to not live paycheck to paycheck.

And you are right, I will use my experience to provide advice if I find a forum that needs advice. Since you're following me so closely, you should have seen I recently posted on a base assignment forum.

I work and I do not have time to surf the web or post comment by the hour every day.

This seems a somewhat pointless debate.

Perhaps it would be better to regroup and return on December 11, or a few days prior.

Then we could debate banning Congress or even the Fed in its entirety.

Wow, this conversation degraded quickly. Although I have my own opinions on the social topics stated, I will keep them to myself as this isn't constructive. I will say, in my experience, that my views and understandings have matured along with my years. How I saw things in my mid 20s is quite a bit different than how I see things now. So I can see why a 20 something might say "Yes, I have a trust fund with a lot of money. However, I spend my money wisely to not live paycheck to paycheck." and it get taken very poorly by a 40 something who has 3 kids in college and a household to maintain. Maybe we all just agree to different opinions on the social topics.

Obviously government funding affects many that support the military and is relevant. I hope it all gets worked out and doesn't affect anyone here.

My memory may be getting fuzzy, but didn't they do exactly that in the 80's? Pretty sure they did on SS.

The "Normal Retirement Age" (a variable used in calculating benefits for those who choose early retirement) was raised. in the Social Security Amendments of 1983. This had a very small effect on the actuarial soundness of the system short or long term. The amendments did not raise the age of eligibility for benefits.

The amendments did contain a number of revenue raising features, including the taxation of benefits.

"Excuse me, but where exactly is there a demand for the Catholic Church to grant the Sacrament of Marriage for homosexual couples?" Demand from God? Heretical.

"No, the Commies aren-'t coming to your mass demanding your Preist perform a marriage ceremony.'" No, but this the Sacrament that you want.

"This is simply a request for the same level of CIVIL RIGHTS AND RECOGNITION of a union that we all enjoy as AMERICANS, a request that gay couples can enjoy the same benefits and protections FROM OUR GOVERNMENT that you currently enjoy." Caesar should follow God's laws.

And I look to the teachings of my Lord, who commanded me to love all, and judge none lest I be judged. As a true Catholic, I follow their guidance. I suggest some genuine reflection on your part on his words and his humility and assess which side here is fighting for love, and which is fighting for bigotry"

Sorry, in my view this is raising the age for benefits. The age to get full benefits went up month by month depending on birthdate. What did not change is the age for allowing early retirement. But the benefit amount certainly did.

What people lose sight of is SS is not an entitlement for many, nor was it intended to be... most people paid into the trust. And if left alone, the trust would have been sound.

But the piggy bank was robbed to pay for general fund spending, and now we (sort of) have a problem.

Even with current lifespans, etc the fund would have been solvent if left alone. And could be again if that robbery was addressed.

I've paid into SS for over four decades now. With three of them paying the full limit each year. So now we want to say "you don't qualify", or "wait longer", etc.

To ask future retirees to pay for the sins of the past congress rather than get the current congress/president to address the core spending issue is unacceptable in my book.

The biggest problem is reduced workforce "participation"... we have fewer and fewer each year contributing each year to SS. But more and more take. That's a far bigger issue than SS trust fund risks.

Since it's a gov shutdown thread... the idea that SS would stop being paid if a shutdown occurs is pure scaremongering by certain groups. The last shutdown it was very clear that current SS revenues was more than enough to meet immediate obligations. And should be prioritized accordingly. Anything but that is intentional.

Philosophically I'm opposed to taxing SS benefits as well as you are already taxed once when you put the money in.

The one thing I'm not opposed to is some form of wealth based means test. But that bar should be high. Something like greater than $200-300k taxable retirement yearly income. At that point SS income would be noise level. But philosophically even that feels wrong.

At long last, the Inquisition has come to purify SAF. Will you show the auto da fe on You Tube?

Lots of rambling words

OK. I'm going to stop this now. Even thought this is an off topic section, there is no place here for criticism of anyone's religious beliefs or lack of them. Any further pushing of any topic related to whose beliefs are right or wrong will result in infractions and the resulting bans.

Aww Stealth, but it's always so refreshing to come onto SAF each week and learn from someone that my marriage is going to destroy the country/world. Guess I'll wait for the next thread about it.

Anyway, I give the shutdown a 25% chance. Do we have a pool going yet?

I'm on record as saying zero chance of a shutdown. After watching committee chairman Jason Chaffetz embarrass himself by trying to sucker punch Planned Parenthood President Cecile Richards with a doctored graph, I'd say less than zero.
