I am a sophomore in High School and I am taking honors class and planning on taking on some AP classes next year. Would a C in an Honors Chemistry course be detrimental to my résumé?

Dude relax. Get the best grades you can, do extracurriculars, have fun. You can stress about that stuff come senior year. Not saying to not take school serious now but don't over think this. You are a sophomore this is just not the time for this stuff enjoy high school!

I wouldn't say that a C is "detrimental" to your resume as WCS is more than just grades. However, it's ideal that you maintain a transcript filled with A's and B's, and you should work extra hard to bump up that C. But I also think it's great that you're striving for more by taking tougher classes. Just do your best and don't sweat if you get a B or C; perhaps you can use this as a learning experience to help yourself in future AP classes! Godspeed.

USMA looks at your class standing. That is what counts, not GPA, or a particular score in any class. On the other hand, you certainly don't want C's in classes when your competition for an admissions spot has nothing less than a B for example. It's all relative. If you are awesome in all categories, but happen to have a C in one class, I wouldn't wory about it.

Keep in mind, getting into West Point is about wining an admissions spot against the others who are seeking to get that same appointment. It's a competition. Much depends on who that is. Most candidates for service academies have very solid résumés academically and otherwise. They have that goal, and are driven. Thus, you want to do everything you can, stay focussed, and avoid getting chinks in your armor. On the other hand, noone is perfect, and most candidates will have a slip up in a class, or a low score on a section of the ACT.... If a C in an AP class is the worst of it for you I wouldn't fret things too much.

Of course it will be detrimental. It is not going to improve your chances. An A or B would be much better. Isn't that the obvious answer. Should you give up on getting admitted to USMA, of course not. Work hard, get better grades and continue with your EAs.
