Hi,

My name is Quentin and I’m a junior in high school. Embarrassingly, I received a D in Algebra 2 my sophomore year(can’t remember if it was 1 term or 2). The academy website says they prefer a strong foundation in algebra to exposure to calculus. So I was planning on retaking algebra 2 this year, taking pre-call over the summer, and then Calculus-1 my senior year. Is this the best way to make sure they don’t look down upon my application due to my algebra 2 grade?

I would say yes, do your best, study hard and show them that you can work through adversity and overcome challenges.
When you fill out your application, discuss it and tell them what happened and how you worked hard to overcome it.

Just make sure you put a lot of effort in the second go round.

+1 @BoCoMoRex

Remember, in addition to your transcript showing a vast improvement in your grade (shoot for the A), Algebra II concepts are included on the SAT. You will need to master these concepts in order to have a competitive SAT score.

Don't let letter grades get the better of you. I have a friend who is a current cadet who was a C (and one or two D's) student in math throughout their high school carer. They were taking challenging math classes, did well in their other classes, and got a good score on the math portion of the ACT (32 if I recall).

Long story short, grades are important, but so are other factors of your application. Keep working hard. You have a 0% chance of admission if you do not apply.
