Our DS is graduating mid-year from HS this year and has applied to his second choice school which is here in our hometown for spring semester, January 2021. USNA is his first choice. Is there any obscure rule or ramifications about taking college classes outside of HS, prior to going to USNA? We don't want to accidentally shoot ourselves in the foot. I understand the courses will not transfer. Thank you.

My son got his associate degree before he graduated high school. Others get accepted from college. I suspect this would not be a negative.

None whatsoever. He can take all the classes he wants.

No. There are many college applicants and re-applicants in each class, so college courses are not an issue.

Assuming your DS may also be exploring an alternate plan with a national NROTC scholarship as a path to commissioning, as many do, they do have some guidelines on credit limit with regard to earning college credits as an enrolled college student (not dual HS-college enrollment).

Yes, @Capt MJ he is also vying for the NROTC scholarship. We are keeping an eye on that. However, I have a question about this statement:

  • If you are a high school graduate and are currently attending/enrolled in college, all college credits anticipated to be earned during the application year (defined as April to December) will count towards the credit limit.

This means if he takes classes from Jan-May then those are NOT counted. Am I understanding it correctly?

This is where I will always steer the applicant to contact the primary source for a definitive answer. It’s good practice for him to email or call on a critical point of understanding.

I read every bullet in that link, as an aggregate policy, to read there is a cap on semester hours of college credit, what counts toward that cap, and when. My take was that once someone is a HS graduate, it all counts. The bullet point you quoted serves as a reminder that anything an applicant is taking during his or her application year, meaning credits accruing while applying, will also count. It can’t be taken out of context from the overall cap and the bullets above it. That’s how I read it all together as a policy.

The applicant should confirm with the primary source.

Thank you so much--all of you.
His point of contact for ROTC HS scholarship is illusive and somewhat non-responsive. But he can add this to his list.
