I need help with high school graduation gift ideas for my DS. He will be heading to the USAFA (whoo hoo!) and I know he can't take many, if any, personal items along. I would appreciate any ideas that you all might have for an appropiate gift. Thanks!

I'm sure folks will give you lots of ideas. There were several lengthy threads on this last year as well. You might try searching this forum and the SA specific forums for other suggestions.

You'll probably get great ideas from the thread from last year....

My son's (USNA class of 2014) favorite gifts were:

Scrapbook from kindergarten through graduation (definitely left at home!!)
New Silver cross necklace on a long chain so it would hang low enough under tshirt
small address book filled with family and friends addresses 9can have friends fill their info during grad party)
USNA tshirts and shorts so he could wear around town until he left for Iday
Trip to visit with girlfriend's family
airline miles to upgrade his flight to academy to first class
gift cards for places in hometown so his month of summer was filled with movies, smoothies, fun.
new phone that actually worked!
Money to buy printer at academy

All good suggestions.

I’ll add:
Money. Gift cards to local restaurants are good but may get misplaced. Having grandma’s $$$ in their account for another night of takeout is good too.

Sporting goods. If they’re involved in a sport for pleasure they may hook up with others during AC year and partake (skiing, paintball, golf, etc…have to leave it at sponsor’s house but they’ll figure it out.)

Some traditional things not to get or let others get:

Laptop (they’ll get what they need for AC – though some leave them at sponsor’s house for weekend use.)

Good watch (an inexpensive one for AC is fine – save the Heuer for commissioning.)

Clothes of any sort (they can’t even store them.)

Car (not in this household but maybe in some – would be used only 6/7 weeks in the year)

Motorcycle (I seem to recall that they can’t even ride on leave.)

European rail pass (I guess that would be OK if they can squeeze it in between graduation and 30 June.)

Mostly what they need is hugs and encouragement – those are free.

My son enjoyed his digital frame. Most of his other gifts were money or gifts cards. He used these to buy a printer and keyboard.

For USNA, after Plebe summer are they allowed to have iPods? Seems like I read somewhere it was company dependent...trying to figure graduation gifts...I may have read where no iPods but allowed to have iPhone...thanks.

I know for the AFA Ipods are not allowed in the beginning.

One gift if you are religious is a saint medal.

St. Mary is the patron saint of peace
St. Joseph of Cupertino is the saint for fliers (if your child wants to fly)
St. Michael is the patron saint of mariners and paratroopers
St. Christopher is the patron saint of strength, travel and travellers.

We gave our son the medallions of Mary, Joseph and Christopher. Telling him that he will need all in his life for different reasons.

He has actually become superstitious now and wears them all, especially on important dates like when he has an exam, or when the boards meet.

Congrats.

Don't forget St George who is the patron saint of soldiers.

decided

Ordering a new St. Christopher and St. Joseph medallions. His last St. Christopher medal was stolen during hockey season. Thanks for the ideas!

Order a slightly longer, sturdier chain than usual. It needs to hide under his t-shirt. Might be a good idea to order a second chain...these seemed to break during plebe summer.
