Graduation Present?

DS received a nice understated dress watch to wear with his dress blues from his grandparents. They engraved the back with his grad date. Will be something he can wear a long time.

Where did you order the box from? Are plebes allowed to bring the boxes with them?
Some military exchanges have them. Also, Etsy.com has quite a few selections. Best to check with your Plebe to see what/when he is allowed to have. As for the box, it can easily fit anywhere - on/inside desk, or even inside a closet/footlocker.

I can't speak about West Point specifically but in my experience, boxes like this are more commonly given for graduation FROM a service academy. As I recall, I got one and it had both Shoulder Boards and Collar Insignia as well as some less common stuff like a mourning band as well as tie clip and others. I still have mine.
I remember it coming through the Mid Store and I would expect that USMA would have something similar

Every year, our new sponsor plebes ask for a run to Target or Home Depot or Michael’s to get a plastic storage box with compartments to keep all the doodads in. Rugged, inexpensive to replace, stands up to Plebe year, moving rooms every year, moving stuff into and out of storage, being thrown in the bottom of a bigger storage tote or in the trunk of a car, does not stand out.

I received a nice box at my commissioning with the Navy emblem and my comm date. We have often given them as commissioning gifts. That’s when I think it makes more sense.

Capt MJ: do you have a picture of it? Thanks! :)

We got DS his engraved keepsake box when he became an Eagle Scout. It is kept at home in his room. We will be getting him a larger one as a commissioning gift. DH still has his Lieutenant Box I got him from Quantico 30+ yrs ago.

A poster asked for a picture of “it,” related to my last post in this thread, and I assume they don’t mean the plastic tackle/craft storage boxes but my own insignia box I received at my commissioning. I won’t post a photo of that, because of the personal info on it, but it looks very similar to:

Again, I am not recommending this for HS graduation to take to SA, but for SA grad/commissioning, since we seem to be discussing both on this thread.

One child’s favorite gift was a very nice Gerber Multi-tool given by a friend of the family with no military background but thought it would be appreciated. It’s now been through USMA, Ranger School and deployed.

Back to HS graduation gifts for women headed to SA or ROTC. Research the earrings allowed in uniform. There are definitely size limits. Pearl or diamond studs for certain uniforms are allowed, gold or silver ball studs, depending on Service and uniform. It’s nice to have a special pair to wear to a Mess Night or Dining Out or Dining In formal dinners or other dress uniform events.

Actually, I'd be interested in seeing a sample of the simple plastic storage box you were talking about. Mostly wondering what a good size would be...plus you mentioned compartments. Thanks!

This is a good example of one. Usual sources: Target, Walmart, Home Depot, Michael’s, Container Store, etc. Let your new mid or cadet assess their storage needs, space available, etc. and tell you what they want or need.

My son just accepted to the USMMA. For graduation, we paid for half his senior trip to Florida (thank goodness they found out they can still go), we're getting him a nice G-Shock and a nice Norelco Electric Shaver. Plus, we will purchase all his T's, Undies, Shoes, etc.

We'd like to get our DS an electronic picture frame as a graduation present. This particular model allows us to remotely change the photos as long as it's connected to WiFi. Does anyone know if this will be allowed? We've read USMA allows an 8"x10" picture, but unsure about the electronic frame of the same size.

We're also getting one for the house in hopes that he might be able to send pictures our way too -- eventually

@Bayonet16 - best to find out what is allowed this year as these things can change. The rules can even change depending on what TAC you have. They have so little space in their rooms for personal belongings.

Yes, thanks. That's exactly what we're trying to do -- find the definitive source for whether a digital frame is allowed. His paperwork for this year said 8X10 picture is allowed, but it doesn't address digital. Any suggestions?

If you want to get a digital anything, it would be counter to a LOT of DoD policies to have it be remotely addressable by you. Nothing in a DoD enclave should be controlled in any way by someone outside.
