MO son returned from the inaugural 2 week training at Great Lakes. Said it was OK, but understood the reasons why they did it. He was very surprised how many candidates came really out of shape!

Days consisted of PT, classroom training, drill, etc.... at night fire watches, laundry, etc. He mentioned it would have been nice to have an hour a day, or one meal a day to talk to your fellow candidates. Build a little comraderie. Really his only complaint was this he didn’t get enough food....he has a crazy metabolism, but that changed the second week as one kid had to be hospitalized for symptoms of malnourishment or something similar.

Of the 70 or so who participated, 3 or 4 quit and went home.

Cheers!

Pretty low drop rate!

When DS attended orientation at his college, midshipmen were not allowed to speak to one another, and could only speak to cadre when spoken to. That changed the last full day of orientation when they went on a picnic at a lake, did sailing, games, swimming, etc. That's when they really bonded as they discovered they all went through the same emotions and they all considered dropping at some point. At Great Lakes this bonding really doesn't matter much. When they get to their unit bonding will be very important.
