I am currently a high school Jr (I start my senior year in the fall of 2023) and I am looking into joining the Navy as a commissioned officer. I have held a green card since the fall of 2021, obviously I am not a US citizen. From what I have learnt from researching, NRTOC midshipmen would be part of the IRR. Would this expedite my citizenship so I could be commissioned after college? If not, is it realistic for me wait till the mid-end of my Junior year to receive citizenship and hopefully contract afterwards? All input it welcome, if I am in the wrong thread please let me know since this is my first time on here. Thank you.

Ok. Are you applying for both USNA and NROTC?
USNA Admissions has information on different types of applicants' citizenship status.

Hey bro!

First thanks for your interest in serving, you'll get there. Also I'm about to give you a punch in the face, the answer is no. You cannot join NROTC unless you are a US citizen. You might be able to sign up for a NROTC course though as a civ student, check with your college when u get there.

You must be a citizen first. I had a friend who is fresh off the boat from Italy a few years ago. She isn't a citizen but lied to get into NROTC stating she was, long story short she was on a green card, navy found out and she has been barred from commissioning source for 8 years I think ?
Don't do it wait.

I'll say this DO NOT please DO NOT enlist in hopes of getting your citizenship expedited so that you can be an officer. Enlisting had a very negative impact on my professional development as a cadet attempting to commission. Think carefully about it.

Good luck, maybe try applying for the fed academies they do take international students...

any questions or you just want to talk shoot me a message

Thank you everyone for the wonderful responses! I've talked to one of my JRTOC instructors, who suggested I go with commissioning programs after getting my 4 year degree from college. Once again thank you.
