Greetings everyone. I'm new the this forum and am doing research for my DD who is interested in the USNA. This is such a great resource and I look forward to chatting with you. My DD is starting the 9th grade so this is a going to be a long journey.

@Army_Dad: Congratulations to your daughter for having such high aspirations at such a young age. My $0.02, from a parent whose DD declared in 8th grade that Annapolis was for her:

Have DD open her own SAF account so that she can do her own research. You can still do your own thing, but do it in parallel with her, not for her.

Encourage her to equally explore Plan B, C, D, etc., whether it’s other academies, SMCs, civilian colleges. It’s a very long way to the 12th grade, and teenagers are nothing if not fickle. Even if her path remains fixed, she must have a backup plan.

Seek many first-hand perspectives. It’s not too soon to find local alum, current mids or cadets, active-duty officers regardless of branch or accession path, to ask about their experiences. Meet your local BGO for coffee early in 11th grade. Apply to Summer STEM and Summer Seminar and sports camps.

Above all, let her take the lead in the process. It’s great training for an aspiring mid and officer, and will deepen her conviction, whether she decides to apply or not. It’s a huge commitment, and her owning the process and decision is vital. Best wishes to her.

And you’ll want to read the Acronym List over in the Community Info forum!

Great advice by MidCake.

If you comb through USNA.edu, looking at every page, link and drop down, you will get a lot of your questions answered. If your DD becomes more interested, that primary source is the building block for solid research on her own.

Welcome aboard. One of those backup plans should be NROTC but the path through high school to get there is no different than USNA. Good luck to you and your DD.

Yay welcome Army_Dad. You’ll enjoy this forum. Everyone really cares!
