Good morning.

DD (high school freshman) just got her PSAT results. She took the test cold/no prep and got a decent score. I’m just curious...what type of growth are folks seeing in scores? What was the difference between your DD/DS’s first PSAT and final SAT score?

She’s a smart kid (one of the gets-straight-As-without-trying-too-hard type...like many/most of those here) and I’m just curious to know what others have experienced.

The PSAT is a much easier test so it should be around the same score if you continue working the same as you have in the past. Be sure to try ACT and SAT beginning as early in your high school as possible, I started freshman year and ACT grew from low 20s to a 33 eventually.

There was a massive difference between my PSAT and SAT scores. I was in a similar position as your daughter with taking the test cold and not really preparing for it. After the PSAT I took an SAT prep class at my school, studied individually in a prep book, and had one on one sessions with a former math teacher. In the end there was around a 300 point difference between my PSAT and SAT which can definitely be done through studying and hard work.

My son (who just got his USCGA admissions offer on Tuesday), raised his score 250 points from PSAT (as a Sophomore) to SAT (this past October). I will tell you honestly that he did work at it some (using mostly FREE material from Khan Academy, and a small group tutor for a few weeks), but definitely didn't break much of a sweat prepping. Definitely agree with HB2019 above that 300+ points is attainable through studying and hard work.

That’s great news! A 300ish point gain would take her from competitive to very competitive. Thank you for your response!
