I'm an MSIII cadet in Army ROTC. I know some scholarships are guaranteed National Guard and Reserves. Are there any scholarships that are guaranteed active?

PS
I am already contracted. Can I get that contract changed to guaranteed active duty if that option exists?

For Army I believe the only guarantees for AD are:
  • Graduating from USMA
  • Graduating from a Senior Military College Army ROTC program with approval from the PMS.
  • And I believe graduating as a Distinguished Military Graduate (top 10%).
Otherwise the needs if the Army and your ranking on the OML will dictate AD or not.

Hopefully Clarkson or another ROO can chime in.

Actually all scholarships guarantee National Guard or Reserve. Active Duty depends on the factors @AROTC-dad mentioned above, unless something about your contract already commits you to the National Guard or Reserve. A good topic of discussion for you and your cadre.

Do well this year. Your fitness tests in fall and spring of this year count toward your OML. Your GPA through spring is the GPA used to determine a big chunk of points. Come in fit into camp to score high on your APFT. Get good recommendations from your PMS and do well at camp so you get a good recommendation and therefore as many points as you can.

They draw a line with the OML for active duty or National Guard/Reserves, and if you want active duty and are above that line and your PMS recommend you, active duty should not be a problem.

After camp there is little you can do. Seniors just submitted all their info for their OML and will find out end of this month if what component they get. Which means you are one year away from knowing if you received active duty or not. Good luck and keep us posted.

Just to clarify a bit for those that read this thread.

DMG is the top 20% of the National OML that includes all cadet commissioning.
The Top 10% that would guarantee Branch of choice is the top 10% of the Active Duty OML, not sure but that may change with the new branching model that is in place for WP and will start soon after for AROTC.

I believe Green to Gold Active Duty Option guarantees Active Duty as well.

How does the OML reconcile the GPA of a cadet studying rocket science at an elite university versus the GPA of a cadet studying basket weaving at a state college?

For Army - according to the FY19 OML model (different every year), academic outcomes is 40% of OML points. Up to 31 points for GPA, 5 points for CULP (cultural understanding language program, so this includes language classes and proficiency and other activities), and an additional 4 points for academic discipline. So in addition to GPA you can get 0, 2 or 4 points depending on your major. My daughter is a communications major, so her maximum points available would be 36 out of 40 for academic outcomes (GPA plus CULP), as her academic major would not give her the extra 2 or 4 points.

ADM1 general - 0 points
ADM2 technical (think business admin, not how you are thinking technical - 0 points
ADM3 physical science/analytical -2 points
ADM4 engineering - 4 points
ADM 5 nursing - 2 points
Here is the FY19 accessions criteria and the above information is on or around page 43.

The Army is loosing junior officers at an alarming rate right now. Do your best and stay out of trouble and AD is virtually guaranteed!

Can a AROTC Scholarship recipient ensure their service requirement would only be Reserves or National Guard?

If you accept a Minute Man scholarship, my understanding is this restricts your service to Army Reserves and you are not eligible for active duty.

Looks like its for National Guard - are you limited to a specific state's Guard unit?

You can be a normal AROTC scholarship recipient and request Reserves or Guard at commissioning. I've never heard of anyone being denied but I suppose it could happen in the event of a major war, but then you'd be called up anyway. You do NOT need to take a Minuteman scholarship to ensure Guard or Reserves. Accepting Minuteman Scholarship monies generally forces you (some would say guarantees) Guard or Reserves.

Always best to talk to an ROO on these topics.

National Guard assignments are based off open slots for your branch within the specific state. Speaking from personal experience, there tends to be a cadre member or two with connections statewide that often have the ability to find openings and slots.

No link.... Just a known fact from many Junior Officers in the Army. My son says he does not know of 1 single Lt. Or Capt. That intends to say in past their first commitment.

I am currently serving; it's not a known fact.

What you've provided is anecdotal hearsay.

However, there is no question the strong job market impacts retention...and recruiting. The sky is not falling.
