I will be in the NROTC program at WSU, and I’m a bit confused on what to do with my hair. I am a girl with fairly long hair, but I does go into a bun. I am not sure whether or not my hair needs to be cut.

1) Capezio Bunhead bun pins (Amazon and dance stores)

2) YouTube. Search for videos on military women buns and long hair styles.

Hi JM9 -

I always thought my long, straight, thick hair (LOTS of gray in it now) was my best feature as far as appearance goes. However, even as a reservist, I found it way easier to keep it short. Faster in and out of the shower, cooler during field training, no hair emergency when the bun pins/ponytail holders broke or dislodged, headgear fits consistently (Big one if it is sized and fitted to your head. Nothing like a wad of hair under the helmet support netting during rifle qualification to give you an unimaginable headache.) ... you get the picture.

So my 2 cents - try pinning it up, but spend some time this summer researching a hairstyle that works with your texture of hair - and the time you are willing to spend styling it - so if you change your mind you can implement it quickly.

yep - my DD cut the locks and went with a pixie cut for NROTC and has been a happy camper ever since!

My suggestion would be put it up in a bun. As stated, see how long it takes to do that and how many pins you need to do it. Than go and do a run.

Does your hair fall out of the bun? Hair texture is going to be the crux of the issue.
~My DIL has thick curly hair, it is so thick and curly it would never fall out of the bun, but she would be very hot after a run due to the amount of hair.
~My DD has the same length of hair, but it is fine and straight. She too could put it in a bun, but because of the texture she has problems keeping it in a bun without pins. After a run, she wouldn't be overly hot, but I would bet that her hair would fall out of the bun.

IOWS, there is no easy answer to your question because as any hair cutter would say to you, it is going to matter on your texture, thickness of your hair and shape of your face. Any and every woman can wear their hair short.

Thank you all for the advice. My biggest problem is that my hair is both long and quite thick. Whenever it’s up, I have a fair number of flyaways everywhere, especially by my ears. I’m thinking that cutting it shorter may be the best course of action. That being said, it’s hard to convince myself to cut it!

If your hair is straight, look at a layered pixie cut with long sideburns. The length in front helps you get used to the lack of hair behind. Something like this worked for me.
