Hal Moore passes away

He was the dear friend of my kids' sponsor family. May he rest in peace.

We were Soldiers once and young and will all be again one day. God Bless and Rest in Peace.

"sonny, you can't take no pictures laying down there on the ground"

Journalist Joseph Galloway quoting the battalion sergeant major's admonition to him during the Battle of Ia Drang Valley in a 1992 interview of Lt. Gen. Moore and Galloway by Terry Gross following the publication of their book.

Here's a link to the transcript and the actual interview which NPR re-broadcast yesterday. As you listen to Gen. Moore, you realize Mel Gibson did a decent job of portraying him. And you can imagine Sam Elliott repeating Basil Plumley's words.

There is only one person who could play that part and make that quote in the movie. Sam Elliott. Also "Sir, if the time comes I need one there'll be plenty lying on the ground".

One of the greatest honors I had in the Army was to be able to have the callsign "Serpeant 6", the same callsign as Bruce Crandall.

We had a hail and fair well once, and I had the honor of having Bruce and other vets of the 229th at my table. They were a blast. One of my regrets was not keeping in touch with them after that get together. Wisdom is lost on the youth.
