Handy Links for Appointees & Parents

Our first letter home consisted entirely of the words; "I love you both."
Just those words on an entire (unused) page of paper with the USNA logo at the top.
It was epic. I laughed out loud, while my wife exclaimed; "WHAT?" and "THATS IT?"

I literally lol’ed at that!! Yes the letters are treasured keepsakes. DS eventually used the pre-addressed envelopes and paper. Preferred the USNA stuff, but the latter was quicker and got us more letters.

Speaking of the phone calls, here is a capture of one such event, indoors since it was raining outside. IMG_1029.JPG

My DS’s first letter home simply said: “I did not cry on the night of I-Day...I believe you owe me 40 bucks!” Below this one line he had his 3 roommates sign it.

I had forgot that while playing one of our last basketball games together a few weeks before, I told him that I read a detailer’s blog that said that they would hear crying from a large number of rooms that first night. I told the DS that it was ok to cry that first night. He laughed and quickly added this to our friendly running 40$ wagers (which almost never get paid b/c he normally loses). I thought this to be a safe bet as he could never prove it. I couldn’t have been more wrong. This bet did get paid! HaHa!

Just checking to see that I did add the current Mid Budget Book link, and bumping the thread, as it’s all getting more real now for appointees and families.

Adding updates and bumping for Class of 2024. Recommend going back to #1 post and browsing forward.

MID PAY and APPLYING SCHOLARSHIPS
Latest USNA Midshipman Budget Book, this is the most recent I could find on USNA.edu:

CLASS OF 2024 PLEBE SUMMER INFO
These pages will get updated in late winter/spring 2020 as the PS detail starts pumping out official PS info. Keep an eye on it. You can get a feel for things, but dates will be off. It usually doesn’t change much from year to year, but there are always tweaks.

BWI AND OTHER AIRPORT SHUTTLES
Super Shuttle has just about closed up shop at metro DC-Balt airports.

WHERE TO EAT
Time to refresh that thread with additions and deletions. On my To Do List.

To save you some search time, though I always recommend using the Search box, as the same questions come up every year, here are some starter kit links.

PERMIT TO REPORT (PTR)
Sample (wait wait wait until you get the one for your class) Permit To Report (PTR) package. Typically arrives in the spring. Much does not change from year to year, but changes do occur. This is just to get a feel for the To Do/To Bring before I-Day (wait!):

SHOTS!
Sample immunization form, again, just to get an idea, wait (wait!) for your class’ version:

PARENTS’ CLUBS
USNA Parents’ Club contacts/geographic locations, found on the Parents pages on the website of the USNA Alumni Association, an independent non-profit. The Parents Clubs are independent organizations. They are a good source of support and gouge (Information).

Reach out to them once your Plebe has accepted; there is likely to be a Plebe Welcome event before I-Day. They do not necessarily receive a list of appointees, for privacy reasons.

Note USNA.com is the Alumni Assn; USNA.edu is the Naval Academy, a DOD entity under DON.

FOUNDATION PREP
USNA Foundation, source of Foundation Scholarships for prep, is under the wing of the USNA Alumni Association:

CALENDARS
USNA Calendars, on USNA.edu, good source for key dates, academic schedules, etc.

NAVY SPORTS (NAAA)
The Naval Academy Athletic Association, an independent non-profit, supports and oversees varsity and club sports. This is the source for schedules, ticket purchases, gameday information.

The NavySports app for iOS (I don’t know what other smartphones) is a handy way to check schedules, track live updates to games, read articles.

ARMY-NAVY GAME
There are many, many threads on this, tickets, Plebe liberty, etc.
Most years, the game is played in Philly. Every couple of years, it’s played elsewhere, per the contract.

When Philly hosts, the Philadelphia Sports Congress has the comprehensive game website, “Philly Loves Army Navy.”

WHERE TO FLY INTO
BWI, Thurgood Marshall Baltimore-Washington International Airport. Closest to Annapolis, great Southwest connections, and their flight change and luggage policies are great for the occasionally volatile midshipman schedule.
Dulles (IAD) and Reagan National (DCA) are the other two airports, with drives dependent on metro traffic and time of day.

WHERE TO STAY/DO WE RENT A CAR
Use the Search box for years and years of suggestions and tips. Try “Induction Day,” “I-Day,” “PPW,” “Plebe Parents Weekend.” There are chain hotels at every price point in and around Annapolis, plus B&Bs, etc. Many use AirBnB, VRBO and locally, Annapolis Accommodations, for whole house/condo rentals. This can make great sense in a town where eating out can be pricey.

Pro Tip: Book early (months! now!) for any event where your mid and his or her entire class’ worth of other parents are all descending on Annapolis. Or when it’s a class reunion weekend in the fall, which is essentially every home football weekend, not just the designated Homecoming. Classes take over entire hotel blocks.

CONCERTS AND MUSICAL EVENTS

There are concerts throughout the year, as well as musicals and other productions, and outside artists (Distinguished Artists Series), that are enjoyable. My personal favorites are the Halloween concert (mids in the Chapel rafters singing Phantom songs with Broadway lighting!), Messiah and the Glee Club concerts. Heck, I like them all.

Brilliant and super helpful post! With supreme gratitude to Capt MJ! Thank you!

It’s all outdoors. I have seen veritable entourages with family, pastor, Boy Scout troop leader, coaches, godparents, GF/BF, etc.

Go browse the USNA forum for I-Day/Induction Day posts. You will get a good picture of what goes on, and plenty of advice.

Plebes-to-be get sucked into Alumni Hall starting very early in the AM. You don’t see them until they march into Tecumseh Court (T-Court) for the oath-taking. You will be standing with hundreds if not two thousand sweaty others trying to find your plebe after a long day of firing up the credit card in the Mid Store, walking around, hitting the Supe’s brief, etc. after the oath-taking, the plebes are released to find you for a few moments.

Enjoy this video of the mighty firsties of 2019 marching as plebes into Bancroft Hall and the big bronze doors slamming shut.

In response to the video...

i’m not crying....You’re crying!

I can’t find a date for I Day class of 2024. Does anyone know the date to report?

There have been some threads on it recently. One source showed 6/25, I think, another the first day or so of July. It all backs up from Reform.

This reference shows 6/25, but note the “Tentative” in red, which may or may not refer to that particular event.

This is the link to watch when it flips from 2023 info to 2024. Don’t overlook the upper left hamburger menu.

Thanks Capt. will the date be clear in BFE?
Does anyone that already received the BFE have a firm date?

Here’s a screen shot of the ac year calendar link I posted, with the red “tentative.” I suspect the date is correct, and the tentative might be changed any day now.

Not sure why I can't watch one of these videos without becoming an emotional mess... my kid wasn't even marching... :) I hope that I won't be the only mom crying my eyes and heart out during this process... otherwise my son will be VERY embarrassed and I will have to hear - oh mom... once again. Thanks for sharing.

Class of 2024 PERMIT TO REPORT Link, virtual this year:

I rarely get involved in advising Parents once their kids get into USNA, but one resource that isn't mentioned that often is the various Parent's Clubs. (I was just reminded by an email from USNA ...asking BGO's to tell their candidates about the local Parent's Clubs. USNA and BGO's aren't allowed to give out candidate information to the Clubs, so its up to you parents to find and reach out to the Parent's Club. I send an email out to all of my successful candidates, but I know that info doesn't always get out to Parents. This is the link https://www.usna.com/parents.

I know there are alot of Facebook and other Social Media groups, and like everything on the internet, the quality of information varies. However, the local parents clubs have plenty of good people who have kids in the same boat as you do , and are a great resource.
