Hangout: USNA Induction Day / I-Day Class of 2028: Thursday 27 June 2024

DS was confused about this too. He determined this field is left blank if you are not prior military, as prior military would have DOD information to enter there because they would already have military medical coverage.

I hope he was correct in thinking that as he has already sent that form in. Maybe someone will chime in that knows for sure.
Also appointees that are military dependents already have CAC IDs and Tricare.

I think the status change to AD gets done on I-Day, and DEERS will then show former military dependents now in AD category for CAC and TRICARE. Having that DoDID field number filled in with their info allows them to identify that group easily and take appropriate actions. Prior enlisted would be taken care of on I-Day minus 1, with the rank change.

What information goes into the "DOD" field on the Mini-Registration Form?
#2: Please disregard "Alpha Number" requests within the forms. Your alpha number will be provided closer to I-Day. Additionally, please disregard "DOD/DOD ID" requests within the forms unless you are a military dependent or active duty.

Anyone else have a Governor drop by to do morning workouts with a USNA plebe class at sunrise Plebe Summer PEP?

This is Governor Wes Moore, Army vet by way of Valley Forge Military Academy and Army early commissioning program, B.A. and Phi Beta Kappa Johns Hopkins University, Rhodes Scholar, Oxford.

I hope he drops by again.

My governor can definitely NOT beat up your governor. He did the Army proud.

(I first learned his story many years ago, through the book "The Other Wes Moore." A very compelling read.)

And he is the first one to say he was messing up in school and being a bad kid on a bad path, which is why his parents sent him to VFMA. As it has done for so many others, the military lifestyle and culture gets people on a path of purpose.

Anyone know if he has been invited up to USMA to work out? Nothing like having a vet drop by to inspire you. Hooahs all day long.

How does wearing retainers work during Plebe Summer? I'm finally getting my braces off but now I am worried that I will not be able to wear my retainers for the time I need

Yeah, this was a great morning! He was in my running group that morning. I have to say in general I actually liked PEP, and I was worried I'd really hate it. The first five or so minutes really sucked, but that's always been true for me with running and I *like* running overall. '28, if you aren't running in the very early morning yet, like 0600 (that's 6 am), DO IT. Wake up, get out of bed immediately, men practice shaving your faces with a crappy razor, then put on your shoes, go for a run, and do your PS prep workout. Doesn't have to be a hard or long run, just move your body while you are still groggy. I started running very early a.m. before PS and I'm really glad I did.

So much of PS is doing things you think you can't, or that you'd never do yourself. It challenges what you believe about yourself and other people. It is only *after* Herndon that I get that "silly" little tradition as a capping event for plebe year. We had to take turns being really uncomfortable for longer than we wanted. The guys on the bottom rotated in and out. You had to be covered in grease and one of my roomies is still washing it out of their hair. People standing on your feet, elbowing you, knees in your face, butts and crotches in your face, friction burns and bruises, pulled hair, but you keep going. And hey all of '28: notice in a lot of the photos how many women were in the stack, with other people standing on them.

You are permitted and encouraged to wear your retainers at Plebe Summer. Active orthodontic treatment must be completed before reporting. Bring your retainers with you on I-Day.

Once academic year starts, it’s helpful to get one of the UV/ultrasonic cleaners. Great for your retainers and mouth guards.

Mailing packages - once the academic year starts.

Here is what I am bringing so far to I-DAY. I thought I’d put this here so people can correct me or maybe take a couple things I am bringing. I’m a guy.

Black Compression Shorts- Nike Pro Men’s Dri-Fit Fitness Shorts

White Underwear- Nike Dri-FIT Ultra-Stretch Micro Men’s Boxer Brief

White V-Neck- Nike Dri-FIT Essential Cotton Stretch Slim Fit V-Neck Undershirt 2 Pack (Sold out on Nike, get them online at Kohls)

Brooks Adrenaline GTS 23 Black/White

Styptic Pencil for shaving (I just found out what this is but apparently they work really well and when you have to do quick shaves it will probably come in handy

Small Face Wash (They will probably decent body wash and I won’t have hair so I’m just bringing the face wash I know works for me)

Phone/Charger

Paperwork

I bought a lot of the clothing. NOT cheap. I was in desperate need of underwear anyways though and it was an excuse for my mom to buy it. My strategy is to bring about 6 pairs of underwear, 3 pairs of compressions, and then 4 V-Necks with me in my I-Day Backpack. I am going to put the rest of clothes in my first care package that I will drop in the mail the day before I-Day and have it delivered to me.

I am going to plan 2 care packages total that I will pack myself ahead of time in order to make it easy for my parents. The first one I will drop off in mail day before I-day and second one will be around the 3-4 week mark depending on what I am feeling when I talk to my parents on the phone.

I’m just gonna put some nutter butters, these really good bars called off the farm bars, a bunch of nature valley bars, and maybe some other snacks and then the clothes in the first package.

It doesn’t really matter what brand you go with IMO whether it be UA or Nike. I have tried both through the years and I find Nike tends to be better, especially in the baseline Drifit vs UA tech line. I don’t have experience with the Naval Academy but I do have extensive experience in the outdoors and long endurance races where gear matters. I really think it’s necessary to have the proper gear meaning no cotton. The nike gear dries very fast and wicks moisture well. It is practically the same price so I would choose it over UA.

Done a lot of running. Done a lot of races. Tried a lot of shoes. Nikes are cool. They are **** for longevity of your body. If you get fitted and scanned, there is a very high chance you will get fitted with a brooks shoe. They may not be as stylish but they really are the best trainers. I have flat feet so I need the support but adrenaline GTS really are the go-to shoe for anyone that needs a reliable, supportive, daily trainer. If you have bad foot problems, invest in orthotics.

Here’s a couple questions I had for the group:

1. Can I get away with a couple nutter butters
2. Can I have a lacrosse ball or something similar to roll out feet and ankles. What about icy hot?
3. Can I bring my own razor/Do I want to?
4. What’s an item you guys are bringing on I-Day or an essential snack you are putting in your care packages?

Dude, if you bring all that stuff on Iday it's going to get stuffed in storage until after PPW and you won't see it until reform, if you are lucky and it doesn't all get lost. Bring nothing except compression shorts. Make your first care pack and either mail it or have the rents mail it on Iday from Naptown. Thousands of us have made it through the first week of PS wearing cotton underwear, men and women both. It's six weeks. You could hold your breath for six weeks if you had to. Bring, wear, your running shoes. You get to wear those 90 minutes a day on 5 mornings a week. You get measured and fitted for two pairs of running shoes you wear the rest of the summer. They measure you for insoles too if you need them. Snacks? I was an "orphan plebe" and didn't get a care package all summer but we had SO MUCH food, people's parents thinking we all starving or something. Everybody shares, so yah send whatever you want but the food is plentiful and pretty good. You need a lot less than you think you do.

So if we’re bringing our own running shoes you recommend wearing them on I day?

Deckplate gouge right there.

And when you’re deployed, you think twice about wearing anything synthetic. Cotton burns. Synthetics melt and bond with the skin.

Fact!
This is why the camouflage Navy Working Uniform (NWU) is not authorized for wear aboard ship. You might see people wearing it inport
but not while at sea.
As to why the Navy chose an official working uniform that can't be worn at sea. . . Riddles.

The Navy would be an easier place to manage and work if it wasn't for those pesky ships.

Yes ma'am, us now-3/C (!!) specifically prescribed *cotton* undergarments for CORTRAMID, or at least those of us who got the COTRAMID East packing list. @OiledPancakes I wrote this in another post, you wear what the Navy tells you to wear, even if there is something "better" you know about. For PS, everyone wears the same shoes and socks (pretty good socks) and underwear and compression shorts and sports bras, eats the same food, uses the same notebooks and pens and body wash and deodorant and toothpaste. You get a chance to go to the Mid Store, I think? about 2-3 weeks in? Worry more about being the best you can as much as you can, getting yourself in the mindset of helping out your shipmates no matter what, and learning actionable things from your many mistakes. Check my earlier posts.
