Hangout: USNA Induction Day / I-Day Class of 2028: Thursday 27 June 2024

Definitely will get plenty of shared stuff from your shipmates and their care packages if you don't get one.

Word to the wise though ....... don't gorge yourself on tons of chocolate chip cookies from one of those shared care packages. No fun having to run to the head at 0dark30 to puke ...... ask me how I know. ;)

Quick question re: flights...does the flight costs of the Plebe for I-Day get reimbursed?
Yes. There are forms in the PTR to fill out. You will also need a print out of the receipt with their name and that it was paid for by credit/debit card. They will not reimburse if you use airline miles.🙂

And, per military travel regulations, the military will reimburse up to the cost the military air contract would pay for official travel from your particular Home of Record to first duty station for accession into the military. If the one-way ticket costs $300, and the military contract rate for that travel is $207, that is what the reimbursement is. I and every other military member past or present on this forum have done our share of traveling in middle seats in the worst parts of the cheapest economy fare section on a multi-leg journey, if the nonstop is more expensive. If the military is booking your travel, that’s what you get.

If you are driving, it’s the DoD mileage reimbursement rate for the miles per the DoD mileage charts for a straight drive from Home of Record to duty station. That also includes tolls, though it is hard to get an instant paper receipt these days with auto-toll camera and transponder billing via EZ Pass or similar.

I think you can also include mileage to the airport.

Do you get a "preference" for which company you're put in? Adding on, at the end of PS, will you be able to room with someone that isn't in your company? 🥲🥲

No and no. Companies are roomed all in the same place in Bancroft. As plebes we changed rooms and roommates in the middle of fall semester, the beginning of spring semester, and middle of spring semester. In my company we could express preferences for the semester move. That all varies by company though. Some roommates are great and some roommates aren't so great, but you figure it out and get along because that's what we have to do. Also that's how it works aboard ship, I've heard. I am about to head to PROTRAMID so I will get to experience ship (and sub!) life first hand, can't wait!

If it’s the norm in civilian college land, it’s likely to be the opposite when you are on active duty as an adult at the Naval Academy. You learn to roll with this stuff. You will get some flexibility later on when there is opportunity to choose which classmates in company you want to live with.

Like everyone has said, no to both. I will say that each class since '23 has been moved around either individually or together as a group. Not sure if your class will get the same choice as we are getting a new dant this coming summer.

As the parent of a P2B, your insights are informative and refreshing.

All the best on PROTRAMID. If you are so inclined, I for one would LOVE to hear how it went and what your impressions were. Safe travels to you!

I'm sure a thread exists for this (but cant quite locate it): what are summer schedules like? I had read that mids have multiple summer "sessions" with 1 full week off. Comments on this?

Has anyone received their snail-mail PTR info with I-day report time and company information? Apologies if this has already been answered.

We have training "blocks", they're called. There are four of them, block 0, 1, 2, and 3. You can find the dates on USNA's website under Academic Calendars. Block 0 starts right after finals end in early May. It's usually shorter than blocks 1, 2, and 3 and it's also usually for fall-season athletes, or for people who are going to be detailers (training staff) for STEM, NASS, or plebe summer. One of my squadmates had a special group training during block 0. Blocks 1, 2, and 3 are usually 4 weeks long, give or take a few days. Generally speaking, each of us regardless of year group has 2 training blocks, and then 1 block of leave. Some mids give up leave to take a summer course, either voluntarily, like to get ahead in your major (I am doing this), or involuntarily because you failed a required course that you need to pass to move ahead with your year group. Then your 2 training blocks depend on what year you are. As a rising 3/C, I have one block of PROTRAMID (Professional Training for Midshipmen) and one block of YPs, Yard Patrol cruise. For PROTRAMID we get introduced to the warfare communities in the Fleet, both big Navy and Marine Corps, with about one week each for Marines, ships, subs, and aviation. Currently PROTRAMID happens in Norfolk (where I am going) or San Diego. YPs are sailing up and down the Atlantic coast and run by groups of 3/C, learning navigation, ship handling, etc. I will let rising 2/C and firsties talk about their summer training because they know the details a lot better than I do.

Thank you for the detail...I appreciate it.

There is no “snail mail” PTR info. Everything is online and should be printed/copied/submitted as indicated. I-Day report times should come in an email this week. Company assignments and alpha numbers come in an email in mid-June right before reporting.

As always, I will steer you to researching the primary source first, reading all pages, links, menu items, at usna.edu:
