Hangout: USNA Induction Day / I-Day Class of 2028: Thursday 27 June 2024

There is no “snail mail” PTR info. Everything is online and should be printed/copied/submitted as indicated. I-Day report times should come in an email this week. Company assignments and alpha numbers come in an email in mid-June right before reporting.
Then what is the "Permit to Report Letter" that I see on the checklist? 1716674383717.png

USNA will email you an electronic PTR letter that will include your reporting time. You should print this out and have it readily available when checking in on I-Day. This is how it was done for '27, so it may or may not differ this year. Hope this helps!

Awesome thank you! I take it I will get this email a week or two before I day?

Greetings friends.

Father of incoming 2028 midshipman here: I think the term used here is 'DD' for my daughter. Honestly, what does the first D for DD and DS stand for?

Putting aside forum lingo, let me see if I can repeat back, restatement, and dive deeper into a few points I've gathered from DD's materials, the USNA website, and you kind folk.

1) PACK: To I-Day, DD bringing certain clothing items beyond what the bare PRT requirement is any where from 'Possible' to 'Recommended'. It appears some diversity of opinion on the matter. I am gathering, though, that for females (like DD) a few more sports bras, undies, and compression shorts would be between 'Ok' to 'Recommended'. And by a few, let's say three of each. This appears to align with the PRT recommendations on page 17. Just ensuring we're either on course or close enough.

2) CARE PACKAGE: I'm a little fuzzy on the recommended Plebe Summer/PS care package. Yes, I know the PRT left-and-rights on page 22. But it seems those that have recently gone through PS suggest that food is unnecessary and personal items probably unnecessary too, given the limited space and the Plebe's ability to shop, at least occasionally. Almost seems like an envelop with some pictures and an encouraging note is best, absent being told to send 'X' during the phone call. So that is presently my plan, absent some 2/3/4Cs or staff telling me I'd be a neglectful father :)

3) I-DAY TRANS PLAN: PRT docs say parents can drive on and drop-off. Ok got it . . . . then what? Drive back out, park at the stadium, wait for a bus, return back, and 30-45mins later miss seeing your kid walk into the building? The prior year I-Day videos show tearful families hugging before DD/DS enter the building -- not kids standing around bored waiting for the bus to re-bring their parents so Mom and Dad can watch them walk into a building. So what am I missing here? If it matters, I'm active duty Air Force and all attendees (Mom, Dad/me, and Big Sister) have DoD ID cards. So if I can park nearby, even if only for a little while, to watch her walk in and then move the car to the stadium and ride the bus back in for coffee and donuts, I'd like to know it.

So those are my (present) I-Day questions. Hopefully, not repetitive.

While not technically I-Day relating, let me squeeze in a bonus question:

What photos, exactly, does the Alumni Association provide for their fee? Is it only Plebe Summer? Or are photos throughout the year uploaded?

Appreciate it.

I know this was not the question you cared about but DD is dearest daughter.

DD dearest daughter, DS dearest son, DW dearest wife and so on. SAF thing.

And also, @Spankucus, as far as clothing goes, if you are planning on sending extra clothes like compressions and other stuff, it seems the tactic is to keep what you’re carrying to a bare minimum on I Day and then have you, the parent, drop all of those items (the clothing and other things you wanted to send) off at the mail place right after dropping off your daughter. Make sure the box is around the size of a shoe box. I think people said it takes about a week for it to reach her, so maybe tell her to bring like a couple compression shorts and sports bras in your backpack on I DAY.

That’s if you want those clothing items. Many people say they do just fine without them.

Awesome, thanks. Shoe box it is with some clothing, pics, and family-signed letter.

BTW, my original post now ominously says "This message is awaiting moderator approval, and is invisible to normal visitors."

Program probably caught my reference to being Air Force and immediately placed in the 'super sus' category.

Or I edited it too many times (which, apparently, can trigger that too, as this thread suggests).

One of the two.

@Spankucus for DD you are pretty much spot on, extra compression shorts, sports bras and that is about it, rest can be shipped to them when they tell you what they need - also, about 3 weeks of feminine products of her choice. They will get to visit the mid store to buy needed toiletries after about 2 weeks I think? Give her about $100 pocket change. That is what we are doing for our DD.

Yes, park at the stadium and pay $10 is best. You can drop off DD and others then you go back to the bus - just time it so you don't miss it. Say your DDI reports at 11am I would suggest drop off at 9am (me being an Airport Dad I would drop off at 8am) - gives plenty of time for the switch. Of course, if you are early enough she can ride the bus, no need to drop off - less work and stress. Now if she reports at 7am then it will be a very early rise for you. On I-Day forget parking on the Yard or anywhere near the Yard - the stadium is your best option. BTW, my wife just downloaded this from the BLB facebook site - it has some info on care packages and sending mail. Looks interesting at first blush.

Yeah no problem, I think that is my plan. I am also an entering plebe.

I think if you edit a post it has to have moderator approval.

We love our Chair Force brethren! ;)

If you edit it more than once in short time, it gets held for moderator approval. Likely someone years ago posted a message and went back and changed it would be my guess.

I-Day Travel Plan

If you have a DoD ID card, you can drive in and park - IF you can find a spot that’s not reserved for staff, faculty, I-Day team, etc. Typical of most waterside Navy bases, parking is at a premium. Everyone who works on the Yard knows they have to get there very early that day to find a spot.

Or, skip the drop-off - it’s not like DD is going to be loaded down with stuff - park at the Stadium in plenty of time, board the bus as one group, get dropped at Alumni Hall, do a time check, retreat to the shade for hugs, DD gets into line.

Do NOT loiter in front of Alumni Hall if you have too much time. Go across the street to the parade field and the shade trees. There is a known vortex in front of the Alumni Hall doors. If the line is moving swiftly, friendly helpful people will come out looking for appointees to gather them into the kind and welcoming embrace of I-Day. Pro tip: there are restrooms beneath the gazebo on the parade field.

You won’t see her again until late in the afternoon at the oath-taking. After the oath-taking you’ll meet up with her at the alphabet sign for your last name for a brief respite, then off she goes.

Many will help with your questions.

Re-posting 2027’s I-Day video as a training aid:

Incoming P2Bs, wondering about how the pace will feel to you at USNA on I-Day and during the blur of Plebe Summer?

See the video below - I am a fan of Daniel LaBelle’s YouTube channel. He is creative, hilarious and immensely athletic. Never fails to lighten my day. This video always reminds me of observing plebes. Relax into the channel as needed to take a mental floss break from all the unknowns bumper-carring around your brain.

And - it DOES get better. You master time management, you realize you actually are achieving satisfactory grades in all evaluated areas, you are having some fun, you have made great friends, and you laugh regularly amidst all the stuff that exhausts you.

Man, less than 1 month until I Day. Time is FLYING by. I’m super excited to be surrounded by like minded individuals but also nervous…

@Capt MJ is spot on per usual. Another suggestion, there are parking garages within a walking distance away from gate 1. Might help your DS/DD to get a few steps in and take a little breather before heading on the yard. There will be a line at the visitor center, I think I waited like 20ish minutes to even get onto the yard, so just be aware of that.

If you can pull it off, I suggest staying within walking distance of the Yard. (My version of "walking distance" is within about 20 minutes.)

We did this, making that walk to Alumni Hall as a family. DD had an early report time and it provided an opportunity to expend some energy, get the blood flowing, release some adrenaline. Not a lot was said, but it seemed to be a de-stressing experience for all.

The nice thing is that, because it was I-Day, entry was expedited. We headed to Gate 3, bypassing Gate 1, with a shorter walk to Alumni Hall. DD showed her papers, said we were with her, and the family was waved through.
