Happy Noruz

This may be controversial, but I think the US govt. should only celebrate and acknowledge official US holidays. Let individuals celebrate whatever they wish. I don't see foreign governments celebrating US holidays, and rightly so. I don't expect nor want the US govt to acknowledge Oktoberfest nor St. Nicholas Day nor any of the other "holidays" we celebrated in my family. So I don't expect nor do I want the US govt to acknowledge nor celebrate Cinco de Mayo, St. Patrick's Day nor Nowruz. I can think of better use for my tax payer dollars than funding another party celebration and decorations at the White House.

Imagine turning the entire White House lawn into a giant biergarten for 16 days every October, open to the public, with the House of Representatives serving the citizens quart-sized steins of decent beer and the Senate proffering enormous salvers laden with Schweinebraten und Sauerkraut, and the President and his cabinet leading the singing. Oh, and since there are three legs to this stool the Supreme Court can provide the music. I understand Antonin Scalia and Notorious RBG are big opera buffs. so maybe they can do die Zauberflote.

It's a good thing you don';t know how much they spend every year hosting an Easter Egg hunt.

I got a good laugh picturing Pelosi in a dirndl and Reid, Boehner, Obama, Biden and McConnel in lederhosen. Can you see it now? Just for the pictures of them dressed like that, it might be worth the millions of dollars this would cost! ;)

Haggis "sheep stomach" is horrible but the new year is wonderful!!! Bring a bottle to every house and have one for the year. I grew up a long time ago. Have a nice day yourself.

Happy Festivus….a holiday for the-rest-of-us….a day to air our grievances and demonstrate feats of strength. Should also be recognized by the White House. Many proud Americans look forward to this day.

As for me: the best time of year!! I look forward to be intoxicated by tryptophan and sleep off my in-laws visit.

Push Hard, Press Forward

Happy Nowruz from the White House. Look it up. Didn't see the Ayatollah celebrating Christmas. God save America!

AF,

I have to thank you for starting this post.

Yesterday, I went to my P90X workout class. There is a Dari (Persian) speaking Afghan woman in the class. I walked up to her and asked, "Is it too early to wish you a Happy Nowruz?" She gave me a funny look and replied, "no it isn't and thank you very much."

I wouldn't have know about it without your post.

I think it is only Iranian Persian not Afghanie even though they may speak a persian dialect.

As for growing up, try the sixties and the draft, enlisting and then SEA for my own service. Now one Marine Captain Daughter and one Navy Ensign son. Tell me to grow up when you do. Just had to vent on that. Sorry to all. Happy Festivus

Before I head off from this thread AF let me say this so you know where Im coming from. Im sure you;re a great person, and my frustration got the best of me, for that I apologize. But as an Iranian American I have experienced racism my entire life, being called a terrorist, terrorist sympathizer, etc... I now hope you can understand my frustration when as a future naval officer, on a United states military forum nonetheless, I come across it again. Its upsetting when a celebration of spring for your culture is mocked when all it takes is to just experience it and see how different it really is. Thank you for your service. Imagine that same feeling you felt when you first signed yourself up, why you were doing it. Now imagine feeling like you weren't really wanted in the first place, like no one bothered to respect your culture or who you are. With that said, I hope we can be friends in the future.

future, your parents raised a good son.

AF, I was raised in the 60's. My father was vehemently opposed to US involvement in Vietnam and could have and wanted to arrange the same dispensation for my brother as was received by Dan Quayle and George W. Bush. My brother followed his heart, which landed him in Vietnam. I would never raise the military service of one generation over another, but the Vietnam generation's service, with all the "outs" available, was in many ways more difficult than the others.

To everyone else, we are the most multi-ethnic, multi-religious, and by many measures, the most successful country in the history of the planet. Politicians are going to drink Guiness in Boston, eat kielbasa in Chicago, ribs in Memphis, chile verde in El Paso and smoked salmon in Seattle. It's what we do and what we are here and beyond our borders. Most important, it's what the rest of the world admires most about us.

And we do rescue and respond all over the world by USCG, USN, USMC, USAF, USA without thanks from anyone and condemnation from everyone within shouting distance without admiration or credit. We are still the best whatever your ethnicity.
