Turkey Day underway!
Hats off to all the mess cooks (okay, we know there are more formal names) around the world who are up late tonight preparing a taste of home for shipmates, wingmates, battle buddies in the far corners of the world. The camaraderie when everyone is missing family and home is hard to describe.
One of my main responsibilities aboard ship was food service sanitation. I made it a priority to do organoleptic tests on special meals such as the Thanksgiving feast prior to the crew starting through the chow line. It was a big job and one I took very seriously. Being able to drop in the galley at midnight for fresh sticky buns was a nice perk. My wife is currently working on our meal for tomorrow. I just tried the inspection thing on her. She slapped my hand and called me a name. Told me to get out. No respect.
Yes, doing inspections of the messing spaces can become and very good thing. On my second ship, I was very close to the XO who was mentoring me. One of his teaching methods was after having me accompany him on one of his tasks to have me do it and his daily messing and berthing inspections were one of them. On a not infrequent basis, he would tell me to do his Messing and Berthing Insp and the cooks soon started to treat me very well.
Spent last Thanksgiving (and Christmas...and New Years...) on the boat. But every holiday the cooks knocked it out of the park with pretty excellent special meals. That and small acts of camaraderie made it all far from the worst holiday season I've had.
Happy Thanksgiving folks!
Happy Thanksgiving to all. My own #2 (Psych grad student) and #3 (the cadet) are sleeping but #1 is at Ranger School...it will be a low key but joyful Thankgiving at our house.
Wishing the best to you and your families. <3
@tug_boat I would not take the Romaine lettuce ban as being particularly pro-pie. The best meme on this issue is the one about how the Nation listens to the CDC when they tell us to toss out the lettuce; but that the CDC is treated like the Illuminati when they suggest vaccination. However, I think a great deal of pie eating (and red-velvet-cheesecake) will take place--but all things in moderation.
Pumpkin pie is a vegetable.
Happy Thanksgiving to all of you on this forum. I am thankful for all of you and what you contribute to this site. Every question and every answer here adds to this site's usefulness and I am glad that each of you come here to learn and share.
The Stealth family started the day with our local "Turkey Trot" 5-mile run, and now we are headed back to have a relaxing rest of the day with my son-in-law's parents. I hope you all have a wonderful holiday.
Turkey roulades. Mashed potatoes. Asparagus, sweet potatoes, rolls. Two pies. Cherry and pumpkin. Both with Crisco crust, because a visiting uncle was bitten by a weird tick, and now he can't eat red meat, sodium, nuts, dairy, and a lot of other stuff. And a ton of everything!
Nom nom nom.
Another member PMd me and asked if I would see my DS on T-day.
I thought about I day, R Day, A day and many others but could not figure out what was "T-Day."
I was so embarrassed when I asked and he clarified it to me. .
Happy Thanksgiving to everyone especially to those deployed.
Happy Thanksgiving to all !!! ...
